Lesson 2:

Objective: The student will learn to differentiate the parts of the plant we eat.

Materials:

  1. Assorted parts of edible plants (either pictures or the real thing). Some suggestions include: broccoli, sunflower seeds, lettuce, asparagus, carrots, turnips, radishes, spinach, celery, tomato, apple, peas, and beans.
  2. Which part of the plant do we eat? worksheet

Procedure:

  1. Review with the students the part of the plant

  2. Ask students to observe the food and either write or draw where the food belongs on the worksheet. For example, hold up a carrot (the whole plant with leaves and stem) and talk about how most Americans eat the orange part of this plant. Ask, "If we eat the orange part, what are we eating?" (The root.)

  3. Ask the students to record their answers by drawing or writing "carrot" under the Root column.

  4. Complete the chart with the other plant parts. Students may want to think about common fruits and vegetables and add their own ideas to the lists.

Conclusion:

  1. Let the students finish the work independently.
  2. Use the rubric to evaluate the students work.
