Welcome to Urban and Eastern, brought to you by the folks who created Cow Punk Quarterly. If the truth be told, we were starting to get a little bored with explaining the CPQ name.

That site was not about the kind of music that existed in the early eighties and was called "cow punk". And neither is this. We felt that the terms alt-country, roots, no-depression etc., were becoming a little redundant - after all Wilco take as much from the Beatles as from Hank Williams. And how do you deal with the southern soul of Lambchop, the Irish heart of Steve Earle, or the blues in Oh Susanna?

And what about Australia, where the nearest thing to an alt-country act is The Sleepy Jackson or Augie March. What do they have to do with Nashville (or Slim Dusty for that matter)?

So, Urban and Eastern will still be about rural tradition, pre-electric technology, and a sense of history. It will be about returning to basics; rawness, honesty, aggression - attacking commerciality and the things that have whittled away the soul of our music.

We will cover roots, country, blues, folk and world musics, and want to see a return to what made those musics exciting and fascinating when we first started listening to them.
