The Muses Within

The Truth

She sat across from him in the dimly lit room. She felt as though her mind would shatter from the amount of stress heaped upon her. She couldn't see his face, but the position of his body spoke with great measure. He seemed tense yet drained at the same time. His head hung low in anticipation of what he knew was to come.

She sighed and quietly cleared her throat, partially to help swallow the lump that had built but also to remind him that she was still seated before him.

He lifted his head and his eyes met hers. Her breath caught in her throat as he spoke the words, "All I want is the truth."

----------------

So here we are
We are alone
There's weight on your mind
I wanna know
The truth
If this is how you feel
Say it to me
If this was ever real

----------------

A nervous titter escaped her lips as she stumbled over her words. "I- I don't understand. W- What do you mean by the truth?" She tried to force a smile. She was aware that she was failing miserably. Her smile was looked more like the cock-sided grin of a jack-o-lantern.

He looked at the floor and shook his head. "McKenzie, you know what I mean." His eyes met hers again, "Have you ever had feelings for me? Or was it all just a façade?"

She wasn't quite sure what to make of those words. Before she could speak he stood and began to slowly pace the room. He looked like a man coming to the full knowledge of what was at stake.

----------------

I want the truth from you
Give me the truth even if it hurts me
I want the truth from you
Give me the truth even if it hurts me
I want the truth

----------------

She bit her bottom lip. Her mind jumbled to think of the correct words to say that would cause him to forget all this nonsense he was spewing so they could commence to living their lives again. Nothing seemed right. Words were there but none of them seemed to fit in a sentence together and make sense.

His pacing abruptly stopped and he faced her. "You know, I've spent the past few months evaluating my life and your role in it. I'm not quite sure I've reached a verdict yet but, in recalling the events between us, it's been clear that one of us is lacking something." He returned to his original seat and continued. "I'm not quite sure if I'm lacking the qualities you desire in a perfect mate or if you're lacking the ability to give love."

She sat in a stunned silence.

----------------

So this is you
You're talking to me
You found a million ways to let me down
So I'm not hurt when you're not around
I was blind
But now I see
This is how you feel
Just say it to me
If this was ever real

----------------

He continued, "I feel as though I've spent a great deal of time doing anything and everything within my power to make you happy. I've jumped to try and fulfill every wish and every desire of your heart. Yet I've received nothing but heartache in return."

She crossed her arms over her chest indignantly. "I've done for you and given to you, Georg!"

He smiled, "Yes, McKenzie, but the one thing I wanted, the only thing I desired from you was your heart. You seem to have that securely guarded behind an impenetrable wall." A tear slipped down his cheek.

----------------

I know that this will break me
I know that this might make me cry
You gotta say what's on your mind, on your mind
I know that this will hurt me
And break my heart and soul inside
But I don't wanna live this lie

----------------

At that moment she felt her heart begin to melt. She quickly stood and attempted to pull him to his feet. When he wouldn't budge she fell to her knees in front of him and tried to take hold of his hand.

He pulled away from her as if her touch was like ice and he scowled. A look of concern showered her face, "Baby?" He turned his face away from her. Her face twisted into a frown as the tears began to flow. "I'm sorry." She sniffed as she wiped her cheek with the back of her hand.

He shook his head at her. "No, McKenzie. I've grown weary of trying to perform the art of love for someone who obviously wasn't attentive to my actions." He swallowed hard as he fought his own tears and held his ground. "All I wanted was the truth."

----------------

Just give me the truth
Give me the truth
'Cause I don't care no more

----------------
