Mission Statement for Washington High School Physical Education

The Mission of the Washington High School Physical Education Department is to motivate students to achieve their physical and mental best in physical education. While the students are achieving these goals, they are also learning that daily physical activity is a must in living a longer, healthier life. Our mission is to ensure students receive their daily physical activity, learn activities they may carry on into their lives while enjoying the designated Physical Education time allotted.

~Washington High School Physical Education Department~

I value:

All students participating and having a positive-mental attitude about PE.

All students enjoying PE, even if they aren’t the best at it.

All students appreciating what PE does for their bodies.

The self-discipline that PE may lead students to. (Sports, exercising regularly, etc).

Students believing in themselves during PE time.

Passing on my knowledge of activities to the students.

I believe:

I believe that positive daily physical education prepares all children to incorporate healthy life styles as adults.

All students can succeed in PE.

PE is a great opportunity for all students to learn about life skills such as good sportsmanship and fair play.

All students should experience different types of activities.

Parents should be actively involved in their child’s PE and academic success.

PE teachers need to be great role models for students.

ABC Step 1:

Personal Philosophy

My PE Philosophy is not complicated at all.  I expect from my students is that they do the best they can all the time.  They will not get graded down for lack of athletic ability since athletic ability should not be a factor in the grading process.  Some teachers do include athletic ability in the grading process, something in which I do not understand.

Another goal I have in my PE philosophy is to do my best to ensure that the students are receiving their daily exercise, yet at the same time, they are enjoying their PE time.  When I meet that goal, I know the kids are enjoying themselves enough so that they do not even realize how much exercise they are actually receiving.

My last goal I have in teaching my PE classes are to ensure that my students have improved in the areas of physical fitness throughout the school year.  I accomplish this goal by daily running, stretching, sit ups and pushups.  By the end of the school year, the students have improved greatly on their scores of the fitness testing that are administered at the beginning and end of the year.

ABC Step 2 & 3:

Washington High School Program Goals

A physically educated student at Washington High School will:

1.   Recognize the enjoyment that is possible in participating in physical activity.

2.      Understand and demonstrate the concept of incorporating physical fitness into daily lives

3.      Demonstrate increased the knowledge and application of appropriate PE behavior, good sportsmanship, fair play, rules and regulations of sports/activities in class.

6.       Experience implemented technology into physical education

1.  Recognize the enjoyment that is possible in participating in       physical activity.

Center for Disease Control states positive experiences with physical activity at a young age help lay the basis for being regularly active throughout life.

  1. Understand and demonstrate the concept of incorporating physical fitness into daily lives.

NASPE standard #3 exhibits a physically active lifestyle.

The American Red Cross suggests participating in continuous, vigorous physical activity for 20-30 minutes at least three times a week to reduce chances of heart disease.

  1. Demonstrate increased the knowledge and application of appropriate PE behavior, good sportsmanship, fair play, rules and regulations of sports/activities in class.
  2. Recognize the safe environment that has been provided.

NASPE standard #5 demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.

Standard #6 demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings.

Applying the concepts from the book Positive Behavior Strategies for the Physical Educators will help        any physical educator in making the physical education environment more conducive to learning, while students learn how to maintain appropriate PE behavior.  Lavay, French, French & Henderson. Positive Behavior Management Strategies for Physical Educators.  Human Kinetics, 1997.

  1. Experience implemented technology into physical education.

By applying the concepts from the book Using Technology in PhysicalEducation, anyone who wanted to     can find ways to improve their physical education program utilizing technology.  Mohnsen, Bonnie S. Using              Technology in Physical Education. Human Kinetics, 1995.

WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

Girls PE Requirements and Evaluation Policies

Grades are based on the wearing of (1) appropriate attire (uniform), (2) participation in all activities with good sportsmanship, and (3) written assignments and assessments.

1.     Dressing Out                   = 40%

2.     Participation                    = 40%

3.     Homework/Assessment   = 20%

Each student is required to come to class prepared, to cooperate with other students and the teacher, follow class rules, work on skill level, and participate every day.  For most units in physical education, a PE uniform (gray t-shirt, black shorts,) socks, and athletic shoes are proper attire to be worn every day.  The swimming unit, at the beginning and end of each year, will require swimwear.  It is the students’ responsibility to come prepared with the proper attire for unit as instructed.  In order to receive full daily points, the student is required to be fully dressed out and participate in the days’ activity.  Students not dressed out, will lose their dress out points and will be required to participate in the attire they are wearing at the time of roll call to receive participation points.

Make up work is available for non-participation due to medical excuses only. (Student still has to dress out)  MEDICAL EXCUSES ARE ONLY ACCEPTED FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE!!  Notes from home, or from a doctor must be taken to the school nurse before the before the first bell of the day (8 AM) in order to be used as an excuse from participation and physical education.

Make up work is also available for absences.  It is the responsibility of the student to check with the instructor when absent.

If there are any questions on the grading or expected behaviors in this class, please contact me at (623) 915 – 8414.

Dress Out and Participation Procedures for PE

1.      Students must completely dress out to receive dress out points for the day.

2.      The PE uniform consists of black athletic shorts and a gray GUHSD T-shirt (available in the bookstore $18).  A plain gray t-shirt may be worn, no tank tops please.

3.      Athletic shoes must be worn, no elevated soles.

4.      If we are at the pool, a swimsuit must be worn, however shorts and a t-shirt may be worn over the suit.  Bring own towels.

5.      Students must be completely dressed out to receive their points for the day.

6.      Students are graded daily on participation in class.  Participation means that students are fully involved in each day’s activity.

7.      If a student is unable to participate for medical reasons, make-up work will be assigned for each day of non-participation.

8.      If a student is absent, excused or not excused, you must turn in the make-up work for days missed.  The make-up work can be a 2 page paper on a sport or activity related article, you may also attend a varsity game and get it signed off by a teacher or an administrator, or if you are in a sport, you may get your practice signed off by your coach.

9.      Students will need a signed note from a parent or guardian for the participation to be excused.  A parent note may be used for 2 days.  For medical situations that require a student to not participate for more than 2 days, a doctors’ note must be provided.  Please remember that all notes must be brought into the nurses’ office before the first bell of the day.

10.  Students who are unable to participate must still dress out.

Consequences

Non-dresses:  1st non-dress:  freebee (this means that you still have a non-dress

however does not affect your grade)

                            2nd non-dress:  10% off dress out grade

                            3rd non-dress:  30 minute detention/call home

                            4th non-dress:  20% off dress out grade/1 hour detention

                            5th non-dress:  Referral/possible drop from class

Non-participation:

                      1st:  10% off participation grade

                            2nd:  30 minute detention

                            3rd:  20% off participation grade/call home

                            4th:  Referral

5th:  Will be dropped from class

I expect full participation from everyone in PE.  If you do not enjoy the activity that we are participating in at the time, I expect you to do the best you can do.
