Badminton Unit
8 day unit
55 minute classes
Day 1:
- Grip
racquet (like shaking hands).
- How
to rally the birdie, at the same time learning how to drop birdie, swing
racquet using wrist and keeping eye on bird.
- Dinks
back and forth in partners trying to keep rally going.
- Learned
how to serve, short serve and long serve, while explaining that serves are
ALWAYS underhand.
- Did
5 for each serve then went back into rallies.
- Learned
lob shot; I demonstrated with another student how to keep lob rally going.
Lob shots are always underhand.
Students then lobbed back and forth to each other until end of
period.
Lesson
Plan
Day 2:
- Reviewed
the serve, then practiced using the correct courts.
Partners were diagonal from each other.
- After
practicing serves, then learned the overhand clear.
Shot used to drive the opponent to the back of the court so you can
then set them up for a shot the drop shot.
- Class
then practiced the clear
- Learned
the smash. The shot is angled
sharply downward and you really have to snap your wrist to get the desired
effect. I demonstrated the
smash and explained that this is one of the best ways to earn points, as
your opponent has a difficult time returning the birdie.
- Class
then practiced smash
- The
teacher then demonstrates the drop shot, and students practice, then move
into practicing all shots learned so far.
Lesson Plan
Day 3:
- Demonstrated
how to score points, rotate and who serves when. Class had opportunity to ask questions.
- They
partnered up, went to courts and played practice games.
I made sure to explain that in doubles games go to 15 and in singles
they go to 11.
Day 4:
- Had
class get into partners once again and started badminton tournament.
It was a round robin style instead of a double elimination style.
Day 5:
- Class
warmed up by practicing all shots learned and with usual stretches, sit ups
and pushups.
