Fellow Travelers

Our tour began with departure from SeaTac Airport on June 24, 2003. Well...it really began months or even years before when we began thinking, planning and saving for the trip. And yes, it ended on or about July 9...but every time we share our photos with family and friends or recall memories....we're right back on the trip again. The world in which we live is shrinking; this has been going on for a long time. But it really comes home to you when you board an airplane in Seattle in the early evening of a summer day and fly over northwestern Canada, Baffin Island, Greenland and arrive in Copenhagen, Denmark some 9½ hours later having never seen the sun set. And our world is changing. That too has been going on for a long time and is picking up speed every day. The Soviet Union has broken apart into new and separate countries while Europe has united with a fairly common currency some thought would not happen. On our tour wee traveled by plane, train, taxi, metro, bus, tour boat and cruise ship. We celebrated two birthdays, toasted many different occasions with vodka, beer, wine and bottled water. We hopped on and off how many different metro cars? We toured so many churches, cathedrals, chapels, convents, monasteries and museums. We talked for hours and hours and laughed and laughed and laughed. Remember the "dueling pens" of Kathy and Karen, or Nanna's ordeal with the adaptor plug for her curling iron and later the hot chocolate/cocoa question in Vilnius. And Betsy's search for another lacquer box. And how do you tell the difference between a goat and sheep? As always, it’s the people who make memories. Leaving from Seattle: Nanna, Ann, Bryce, Heidi, Tammy, Judy, Pricilla, Karen, Margaret, Carol and Betsy. Holly was waiting for us at SeaTac having arrived from the Bay Area. Barbara was waiting at the Moscow Airport after her trip from Atlanta. We found the rest of the group at the hotel in Moscow: Carrie, Anita and Jim, Kathy, Ken and Susan. I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts about the trip and seeing the photos. Keep in touch. I hope someday we can have a big reunion. Wouldn’t that be a kick?
