Newton's 2nd Law

An object accelerates when an unbalanced force acts on it.

Mathematically: F = ma

F = force

m = mass

a = acceleration

This means that for a given force, an object with:

·    less mass will accelerate more

·    more mass will accelerate less

·    Units of force are Newtons, N

1 N = 1 kg*m/s2 (mass*acceleration)

·    Some forces we experience everyday:

·      Friction: the force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact

·      Air resistance (drag): slows anything that moves through the air
