Gravity

·      Gravity is one of the four basic forces in the universe.

·      Law of Gravitation: Two masses exert an attractive force on each other

·       Force depends on the mass of the objects and the distance between them.

·      Gravity accelerates all objects at the same rate, regardless of their mass (heavy things do NOT fall faster!)

o    Everything on Earth accelerates at 9.8 m/s2

o    Free fall: when gravity is the only force acting on an object

o    Weight: the gravitational force exerted on an object

§      Weight = mass * 9.8 m/s2

§      Weight and mass are NOT the same!

§      Weight is a force, mass is the amount of matter

§      What would your weight be on other planets?

o    Weightlessness for astronauts is really free fall!

·      Projectile motion: anything thrown follows a curved path
