You Know You Are in Maine When…

  1. A Traffic Jam is ten cars waiting to pass a tractor on the highway.

  2. Going on "Vacation" means going to Bangor for the weekend.

  3. You measure distance in hours.

  4. You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.

  5. You often switch from "heat" to "a/c" in the same day.

  6. Your grandparents drive at 65 mph through 13 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching.

  7. You install security lights on you house and garage and leave them both unlocked.

  8. You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them.

  9. There are four empty cars running in the parking lot at the convenience store at any given time.

  10. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

  11. Every other vehicle is a 4X4.

  12. You're on the shoulder of the highway with your hood up and somebody stops to help you.

  13. Your central heating system is fueled by large logs.

  14. You can see the stars at night.

  15. People drive 100 miles to shop in a real mall.

  16. A girls’ basketball game fills the school gym.

  17. You put the car heater on your list of best friends.

  18. You don't use your blinker because everyone already knows where you're going.

  19. The only people who can afford a lobster dinner are the tourists.

  20. You can get to the store faster in the middle of a blizzard than in the middle of tourist season.

But its when you plan a vacation to a place with natural scenic beauty and then you remember you don't even need to leave home . . .

. . . that’s how you know you're in Maine.

Mount Desert Island encompasses four island towns on the coast of Maine: Tremont, Southwest Harbor, Bar Harbor, and Northeast Harbor.  Although the communities’ traditions are tied to the sea through boat building and fishing, there is a varied socio-economic, rural population of 10,000 which swells to over 25,000 during the summer tourism season.  Mount Desert Island is the home of Acadia National Park, the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, the College of the Atlantic and the Jackson Laboratory, an internationally known center for genetics research.

Mount Desert Island High School is a  4 year public high school with an enrollment of approximately 690 students and 60 faculty. It is a Regional Community High School serving not only Mount Desert Island, but also 5 surrounding mainland communities and 4 outer island communities.

From Humble Beginnings to...

O Canada

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
