Middle States: A Literary Journal

Middle States is a new literary journal that is going to be available both in print and electronically.  Since we are based in Saint Louis, and our print publication is going to be limited, a web site makes sense.  Good sense.

Submission Guidelines:

-We would like to support previously unpublished authors, though all submissions will be considered.  Anything from a fable to an autoethnography is acceptable, given that it addresses the topic of the forthcoming issue.  Keep in mind that your work, whatever form it takes, must be no more than 5000 words.

-Submissions will not be returned, so be sure to make copies.

The Spring 2004 issue of Middle States will focus on animals.  Pretty simple.  We are looking for new works written by, for, or about animals.  For obvious reasons we are disinclined to include stories involving the mountain tapir, Tapirus pinchaque, though works concerning the lowland tapir, Tapirus terrestris, are much encouraged, as we find this species exceptional, magical and soothing.  Furthermore, if you have written or would like to write a story as an animal, your submission will receive special attention and consideration as it is likely to be awe inspiring and extremely zesty.

For those authors with an eye to the future, the Summer 2004 issue of Middle States will focus on hair.  Feel free to email submissions, inquiries, threats, et cetera: middlestates@shadango.com.
