Unit 1 - The Power Of Reproduction
- Chapter One - The Cell Cycle and Asexual Reproduction
- Chapter Two - Sexual Reproduction and Variation
- Chapter Three - Understanding Human Development
- Chapter Four - DNA and Reproductive Technologies
Overall Expectations for this Unit
Students will:
- describe cell theory, and apply it to processes of
cell division, including mitosis, and the function of sexual
(including human) and asexual reproductive systems
- investigate and analyse cell division and factors affecting cell reproduction
- evaluate the implications for social decision making
of scientific research and technological developments in reproductive biology
Chapter 1 - The Cell Cycle and Asexual Reproduction
- 1.1 The Cell: Understanding the Basic Unit of Life
- 1.2 Understanding the Cell Cycle
- 1.3 The Cell Cycle in Your Body
- 1.4 Asexual Reproduction in Bacteria, Protists, Fungi and Animals
- 1.5 Asexual Reproduction in Plants
In this chapter, students will explore the cell theory (that cells
are the most basic unit of life) and trace their essential role in
living things. They will study cell structures and processes
through the use of a microscope.
Chapter 2 - Sexual Reproduction and Variation
- 2.1 The Cell: Understanding the Basis of Sexual Reproduction
- 2.2 Sexual Reproduction in Animals
- 2.3 Sexual Reproduction in Plants
- 2.4 The Value of Variation
This chapter examines the role that sexual reproduction plays
in determining an offspring's traits and how this is an advantage
in nature. Students also learn how reproduction takes
place in a number of organisms such as plants and animals.
Chapter 3 - Understanding Human Development
- 3.1 Reproductive Systems
- 3.2 Pregnancy
- 3.3 Differentiation and Birth
This chapter explains the ways in which the human body prepares for
reproduction. Pupils examine how science and technology have
aided in identifying factors that could affect the health of a growing fetus.
Chapter 4 - DNA and Reproductive Technologies
- 4.1 Biotechnology
- 4.2 The Importance of DNA
- 4.3 Biotechnology and the Human Body
- 4.4 Biotechnology in the Environment
Chapter four describes DNA and gets kids interested
in biotechnology, its methods, results and how it is applied.
