Life Changing Moment
Caitlin’s life changing moment was when she traveled to Honduras, for a medical mission trip working at an orphanage. She had never been exposed to such harsh conditions in which all of these children lived daily. This moment was such a life changing experience; one that ended up changing her life forever. Caitlin could not imagine a life such as this, where people had absolutely nothing. When attempting to relate this to others, people just think, “They have very little, compared to what most Americans have.” But this is not so, they have nothing compared to what people in the United States have. People who have not traveled to other countries that are extremely poor, cannot understand the words “nothing” without actually seeing it with their own eyes. These children had little food, no shoes, torn up clothes, little or no education, no family and bad hygiene. Caitlin at first was in shock and just wanted to cry when she saw these children who had so much love to give, but no one to give it to. She knew right then, why she was sent to serve these children. While spending time and living in the same conditions in which these children lived , she got to really see what it felt like to having nothing and to have everything taken away from her. This experience changed Caitlin greatly. She felt as if she had been selfish, rude and ungrateful for the things she had also had in her own life. Reflecting on this situation she was put into, she realized how blessed she was, how thankful she should be for the things which she had and ultimately the opportunities she will continue to pursue. After returning to the United States, Caitlin wanted to change, be a better person, thank God for all of the good things she had in her life; and to not be selfish and only think of herself. Caitlin believed this experience had pushed her in the direction which would help her pursue all of her goals in life. She now realizes now how big her opportunities in the United States are. Caitlin, ultimately hopes to open an organization for children here, in her own country and intends to push forward in pursuit of this goal.
