My Log

September 3

Ok well despite the fact that nobody reads this anymore, I'm going keep on updating while I still have the time.  Before long I'm going to be insanely busy!

So again I find myself slacking off a bit, when I could be studying.  This is despite the fact that I've already been studying for anatomy lecture, anatomy lab, and my biochem pass out test tomorrow.  Today was incredibly interesting today.  I got my first taste of actually dissecting a human cadaver.  Well what can I say about that...  The smell was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.  Yes it was bad, but it could have been a whole lot worse.  I guess that's a good thing, because I didn't see anybody getting sick or passing out or the like.  Our group of 4 people has a little old lady to dissect.  Basically today, we reflected the skin and fat layers.  After spotting a few of the important veins, arteries, and nerves, we proceeded to retract the pectoralis major muscle, exposing even more nerves, veins, and arteries.  While I could tell some people were really having fun, I'll just say it was a good learning experience.  I was even able to eat afterwards without any problems!  Only 3 more months of dissecting this body!  It's crazy what else we have planned.  Tomorrow we are going to open up the thoracic cavity and extract the lungs from the pleural cavity!

Some more of my roommates have begun to move in.  Pedro is a first year med student who moved into one of the other rooms.  Next Monday, my roommate, Terrance is moving in.  He's going to be a first year pharm guy.  The funny thing is that he also went to UCSD.  He was a Roosevelt guy though.  And our apartment got cleaned today!  It's like sparkling!  Our kitchen, common rooms, and bathrooms are now respectable.  I was betting with one my roommates how long it would stay like that.  The concensus was probably until the end of October.

Tomorrow is going to be an extremely long day.  Lectures and labs from 8-5 and then the biochem pass out test from 6-8.  Fortunately Friday is going to be very quick and painless with just a CPR training course in the morning.  It's going to be hard to believe that just next month, I'll be looking back at this month, remembering how easy it was!

August 28

Well I'm updating this so much earlier than I thought I would be!  I have internet here!  It's been an insane last week or so...  well last few days at least.  Let me do a quick recap of the last week or so since I've moved in.

Saturday was the day of mass moving all my stuff here.  I had first seen my apartment the day before, and as I said before, the place was pretty dirty.  Maybe one of these days I'll get around to taking a few pictures to illustrate.  We have a 3 bedroom place, with 5 guys living here.  Only 1 other guy is moved in right now, and he has a single.  He's a fourth year dental, so he's been pretty helpful with giving me advice and all that.  He's applying to ortho schools right now, so he's a bright guy.  Definitely a cool guy to have in the apartment.  I think starting next week the other guys move in.  There are gonna be med and pharm students.  It'll be nice interacting with people other than dental students.

So Saturday was pretty laid back.  Just hung out with the family a little bit and got settled in here.  Sunday I was supposed to wake up super early to go on this camping trip with a bunch of first year students and some second year students as well.  Well needless to say, I totally slept in and missed the campout!  Oh well, I heard it was just a lot of talking, and introducing themselves.  So because I missed the campout, Sunday through Tuesday was incredibly boring.  I walked around the city a bit near where I live just to get some errands run and to people watch a bit!  (Hahahaha... It's mandatory that I have to check out the girls here!)  When my roommate was around we talked and went to dinner a few times.  The weather the first two days were incredibly awesome.  Totally sunny and probably in the 80's!  Amazing for SF weather!  The past few days we haven't been as lucky as weather has returned to the normal fog, wind, and clouds.

So Wednesday was the first day of orientation and meeting my classmates.  It was insane how many people I recognized from previous interviews with other schools.  Everyone introduced themselves to the class, so that was pretty cool.  I have to say though that I am not that great with names and I have forgotten so many names already it's not even funny.   Ok so anyways, we had a whole bunch of people talk and basically butter us up about how smart we all are and how much hard work it took to actually make it here.  But the real hard work is just about to begin!  Afterwards, we had to go around paying the registrar (I'm officially a very poor student again.  The fees for just one quarter were astronomical!), getting our financial aid checks, getting our student IDs and everything else.  I have to say that I absolutely hate taking pictures.  I took the absolute worst picture for our school roster.  I was kinda laughing and not looking at the camera with my mouth wide open.  It's actually pretty comical.  I could have taken it over, but I decided that this picture will at least leave an impression with anyone that actually sees it.  Pretty funny if you ask me!

Ok well we just finished the second day of orientation today.  It was more of the same.  People filling us in on the events on campus, more people saying how brilliant we all are, and then giving us some advice for the next few years here.  Basically after this, the work started.  We had to pick up our books for our anatomy class (over $250 in textbooks for one class!  And we have like 10 classes this quarter!), get our bone box (basically half of a real skeleton, which I proceeded to put directly in my closet, and get our dissection materials.  Crazy, crazy stuff!

I've met so many cool people it's amazing.  First off, I've run into a few upper class people that I've known through interning together, or even one guy that taught my DAT Kaplan class.  So it's cool how helpful and friendly they all are.  My first year class is about 80 or so people with 8 hygiene students.  So basically I'm going to know everyone in our class really well.  It's amazing how many people came from UC Davis and Berkeley (14 students from each), yet only 5 students from UCSD.  I met one guy, Jerry who was 2 years below me, who went to Harvest!  Pretty awesome stuff.  But anyways, our class seems pretty diverse.  A good mix of people.  So pretty much I've been hanging out the most with this one bunch of people already.  It's kinda funny how quickly you find friends.  We all just spent the whole afternoon getting our stuff together and so anyways here I am, totally exhausted.  And classes haven't even started yet.  I'm supposed to be studying already for my biochem exemption exam which takes place next week, and then in addition I'm supposed to read like 100 or so pages of my anatomy book and be ready to start dissecting a body next week!  INSANITY!  I'm definitely going to go crazy these next 4 years!  I can guarantee it!  I wish I were a student at UCSD again!  That was the life!!!!!

So I'm supposed to be working and already I'm slacking off!  Not the best start I've got to say.  Anyways, I'll try to update as I can, but with my insane schedule I doubt I'll be doing too much of this.  I'm not sure if anybody even reads this bad-boy anymore, but if you do and want me to try to keep up to date, sign my guestbook, send me an IM, send me an email, or something.  Hope everyone is doing well!

August 22

Ok this is the last entry for a long time!  Unless I get internet at school...  But who knows.

So I picked up my keys to the apartment today.  I didn't meet any of my roommates, but it looked like at least 2 of them had never moved out.  There are some good things and bad things about the apartment.  First the good things:
1)  It's incredibly close to school.  Less than 5 minutes walking which is awesome.
2)  The place is huge.  There are 3 bedrooms which are all good sized, and 3 bathrooms as well.  So it's definitely larger than I had imagined.
And the bad...
1) The place, especially the kitchen, is a disaster.  My room is clean and all, but the rest of the apartment looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a good year or so.  Not the prettiest site, but I suppose it could be worse.  Not much though....

It's been fun the past couple years doing this.  Hope I can adjust to this school thing again.  So until I get internet, no more entries!  Come and visit me in the city to see what's going on!

August 20

I had the weirdest dream last night.  I was going to take a final in the second or third quarter of French.  But the bad thing was I had skipped every single one of the classes that quarter.  I looked down at the test and I had no idea what was going on.  I looked around and noticed that everyone was writing furiously while I was just sitting there blankly.  Hope this isn't a sign of things to come!
