Who is Conducting?

Billy Jack Long

Bill is a tuba player, educator, and historian.  He has written articles for music education periodicals and has arranged over 250 pieces for tuba ensemble, some of which are played by the Tons of Joy Tuba Ensemble from Magnolia Avenue Baptist Church, where his family attends and his wife, Indrawahyuni, is a secretary.  Bill has been a symphony tubist, military band tubist, and has done work in studios, circuses, and rodeos.  An interesting trivial (very trivial) fact is that Bill has played for the San Diego Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, Oakland Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco Forty-Niners, New York Giants, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Bell, and the World Series at Dodger Stadium in 1978.  (He often tells students this fact before they know that he was playing tuba with the half-time band at the home stadia of these teams--seventh inning stretch in the case of the World Series.)  Bill has a Master of Music degree in Tuba from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth,Texas, and a Bachelor of Music degree from California Baptist College (both the degree and the name of the institution are now defunct).  Tuba teachers included Everett Gilmore, Jim Self, Larry Johansen, David Jacobsen, Steve Klein, Winston Morris, Jim Jorgenson, Paul Oxley, and Gene Pokorny.  He is a veteran of the U.S. Army Band program.  Bill and Indra have two daughters: Margaretha is a Chemistry Major at the University of California, Riverside, and Iona is a student at Rubidoux High School in Riverside.

Who is Performing?

All who play any instrument of the tuba family.  This includes the tuba (in any shape--sousaphone, upright tuba, recording bass, marching tuba, helicon), the euphonium, and the baritone horn.  Parts are available in bass clef for all instruments and in treble clef (B-flat) for baritones and euphoniums.   Those who intend to use a Contra Bugle are kindly requested to ask a friend for a real tuba, especially if it only has two valves. There will be a special performance (once again) by the Tons of Joy Tuba Ensemble of Magnolia Avenue Baptist Church.

What if I'm not that good a player?

Come anyway.  You'll learn a lot.  We have guys and gals performing at all performance levels, from rank beginner to virtuoso and folks from all walks of life who just happen to play the tuba or euphonium.

What should I wear?

Dress the way you want people to see you.  If you want to wear a coat and tie, go ahead, but this is not 1958.  Wear bright colors.  You may wish to decorate your instrument.  Don't worry about the weather.  We are doing everything indoors.

Will you give prizes this year?

Only four (which is four more than 2003):
• Person who came the longest distance to play TubaChristmas.
• Oldest person performing.
• Youngest person perfoming.
• Best decorated tuba or euphonium.

I don't think you've answered all my questions.
