Labs makes electric circuit from organic molecules

New York: Scientists from Bell Labs have built
transistors, or electric switches, a million times smaller than a grain of
sand, in an advance that could play a key role in developing miniscule
computer chips that use tiny amounts of power.
Transistors, in a much larger form, are crammed together
to make up the brains of computers and all other electronic devices. Using
organic molecules and a chemical self-assembly process, the scientists
have shrunk the size of the transistor to about one or two nanometers, or
a billionth of a meter, which is an unprecedented scale. In research to be
presented in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature, the scientists also
said they built a simple circuit module commonly used in computers, known
as a voltage inverter, from the transistors.
"This is beautiful, simple and clever
approach." said Paul Weiss, a professor of Chemistry at Pennsylvania
State University. "It circumvents many of the difficulties in other
nano-fabrication approaches"
Molecular switches have become something of a Holy Grail
in the development of advanced electronics. physical limits of the current
generation of chips made from silicon are expected to block the
development of more powerful devices within the next 10 to 15 years.
As computer chips are filled with more and more
transistors, their ability to crunch information and process information
grows. Some experts have envisioned microscopic
computers that could be placed virtually anywhere without the need
for recharging.
The research from Bell Labs owned by Lucent Technologies
Inc., adds to a growing list of successful experiments in molecular
electronics, including work by IBM Corp., which in August announced a

A Global Aviation ~security Action Group (GASAG) as set up a few days
after the terrorist strikes in Washington and New York on September 11.
Headquartered in Montreal, the newly-formed security body will design
and implement an effective multi-tiered approach to aviation security
The International Federation of Airline Pilots' Association (IFALPA),
which has a membership of nearly 100,000 pilots and flight engineers from
different countries, has joined GASAG in its efforts to strengthen global
aviation safety.
IFALPA president Ted Murphy said GASAG had representatives of airlines,
airports and other aviation-related organizations.
Some of the areas GASAG will address include risk assessment of
passengers, framing crew procedures, enhancing flight deck security and
cabin monitoring, installing on-board protective devices and exploring the
possibility of having an automatic ground alert system in case of a
problem on board.
Meanwhile, IFALPA's security committee, which met in Tokyo on 'Thursday
and Friday, has emphasized that counter terrorism was essentially a
function of the government. Therefore, the cost of neutralsing terrorist
threats must not ~rove expensive to airlines, it said.
The committee has highlighted the need for an uniform method of
screening passengers and their baggage in all countries. "At present
the system varies from nation to nation which can create problems,"
Mr Murphy said.
The security committee said pilots should know who is boarding
their aircraft. For this purpose, it said, data bases can be used as an
effective source of risk assessment. It stated that this can be achieved
by investing in appropriate technology. According to the committee, pilots
should ensure that the person who checks in at the airport is also taking
the flight.
It has stated that background checks have to be carried out of
airport and airline employees who enter an aircraft without being escorted
by anyone. The committee has further pointed out
that the present method of controlling access to restricted zones in the
airport should be reviewed in the light of recent advances in biometric
identifications.
Referring to the deployment of sky marshals, it said they should
be trained to the level of the U.S. Federal Air Marshal programme.
According to the committee, these marshals should be under the command of
the pilot. The U S department of transportation report, dated October 1,
said since September 11 airlines, pilots and flight attendants mainly u~
the U.S. have implemented additional security procedures which include :
- Prohibiting passengers from loitering at the forward lavatory and
galley areas near the cockpit.
- Strictly enforcing seat belt signs.
- Suspending pre-flight beverage service during passenger boarding
process to allow flight attendants to focus on passengers entering an
aircraft.

Pentagon Unveils 'Smart' ID Cards

WASHINGTON -- The nation's increasingly high-tech soldiers are
getting another computer in their arsenal - this one wallet-sized.
The Pentagon began arming four million troops and civilians on
Monday with "smart" ID cards that will allow them to open
secure doors, get cash, buy food - and soon check out weapons and
other military hardware.
The cards, about the size of a credit card, will replace the
standard green ID cards now used by Defense employees.
They include a bar code, circuit chip and magnetic stripe to store
personal information about its holder. With it, soldiers can access secure
Defense Web sites, log into their computers and digitally encrypt
and sign their e-mail.
"It is their passport to the electronic
world," Defense personnel chief David S.C. Chu said after
receiving his card.
Through the Internet at more than 900 issuance sites worldwide, a
soldier gets his digital picture taken and his fingerprint stored and
picks a personal identification number. In about 10 to 15 minutes,
he gets his card.
John P. Stenbit, the Pentagon's chief information officer, said the
card will help solve the "hurry up and wait" syndrome in the
military, where paperwork can bog down processes.
If a card is lost, officials said its digital signatures will be
deactivated once it is reported, and the employee will get a new card. The
government has had a tough time tracking credit cards, The Associated
Press reported in August, with at least 15 agencies reporting that they
have more issued cards than employees. The smart cards cost the government
about $8 each.
The cards also offer an added security benefit, he said, in an
attack similar to the Pentagon crash.
"It's not just 'Gee, that's really neat,'" Stenbit said,
"but if you have an incident, you can tell who's gotten out of the
building and who's still stuck in there."
At a computer terminal, soldiers will swipe the card and type in
their numerical password. The password provides an extra level of
security.
"There is something she has and something she knows," said
Rob Cobb, a software developer at military contractor Electronic Data
Systems. "It's an important separation."
Within months, a soldier will be able to swipe his card to check out
a weapon or ammunition, and the card can store his sharpshooting
score.
There are about 3 billion smart cards worldwide, according to
industry analyst Frost & Sullivan, but the vast majority are tiny
cards used to activate cellular phones on the network most common to
Europe. Smart cards are also used extensively in South Africa and
Argentina.
Credit-card sized smart cards have taken longer to catch on in the
United States. Some large companies, like Sun Microsystems, use them for
employee identification. Perhaps the best-known smart card is the
"Blue" credit
card by American Express.
"We don't seem to have adopted as quickly to this technology,
and I'm glad to see us moving forward," Stenbit said.
The slow pace is partly due to privacy concerns. A plan for a
national identification card, proposed by Oracle chairman Larry Ellison
and briefly considered by Attorney General John Ashcroft and Democratic
Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, fizzled several weeks ago after
privacy groups raised concerns the cards would allow the government to
monitor citizens'
activities.
The military is also worried about packing too much information into
the card.
There is little encoded on the smart chip - like a fingerprint -
that isn't visible on the card's face. There's only so much that can be
packed into the chip's tiny memory, as well.
"There's a very limited amount of intrusion into anyone's
privacy," Stenbit said.
While officials are considering whether encode medical data onto it, they
said that step is very far off.
"That's a more complex subject," Chu said.

Scientists build microscopic DNA computer
JERUSALEM (AP) — Using a trillion living cells, a
group of scientists have developed a computing device so small it can fit
in a drop of water, an Israeli university announced.
The microscopic computer uses enzymes as hardware,
which in turn manipulates DNA molecules as software, creating a single
mathematical computing machine, called a finite automaton.
The "biological nanocomputer" was created
by a group of scientists headed by Ehud Shapiro, a professor at the
Weizmann Institute of Science, which announced the development.
"The living cell contains incredible molecular
machines that manipulate information-encoding molecules ... in ways that
are fundamentally very similar to computation," Shapiro said.
Another expert expressed both caution and optimism.
"Using the term 'computer' is actually a bit
misleading," said professor Naftali Tishbi of the Hebrew University,
a scientist familiar with the group's work.
Tishbi defined the cells as automatons, meaning
they operate according to preset reactions, but he said the invention is
"a very exciting step toward plausible DNA computing."
The creators of the device said that the trillion
cells, acting together, can perform a billion operations per second, with
99.8% accuracy. The trillion cells require less than a billionth of a watt
of power to operate.
Although the nanocomputer doesn't have any
practical use at the moment, scientists claim it has enormous potential.
"Such a future computer could sense an abnormal biochemical change in
the body and decide how to correct it by synthesizing and releasing the
necessary drug," said professor Zvi Livneh, a DNA expert at the
Weizmann Institute.
Tishbi said the automatons could soon prove to be
useful by detecting anomalies while operating within human DNA.

suspicious is that such a complex system could be running in just 40 days after
the bombing of WTC not to mention the time to construct and set up the system.
It seems like the people responsible for this were ready long beforehand.

will be used in the shoes of New York marathoners to keep track of them. This
clearly shows that all the equipment needed for surveillance is already in

technique was developed that was incorporated into the television. It could
monitor how much and which programs you watched. This is just one tiny, itsy,
bitsy example, the 666 chip on the other hand will be almost total. Capatalists have for long desired a technique whereby they could find out exactly what to
produce and how much.
Surveillance is
nothing new. It was used in all wars of the 20th century which included candid
cameras and video cameras. With the introduction of computers in the early 80s
and the spread of the Internet in the 90s surveillance took a new turn. Today
almost all computers are connected to the Internet at some part of the day or continuously.
This allows for complete profile building of almost all those using the
internet. A very great amount of emails are being regularly monitored and once a
person is blacklisted all his mails are monitored.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 14 2002 (UPI) -- MIT
researchers say newly developed radio-controlled DNA may one day act as
electronic switches, allowing scientists to turn genes on and off by
remote control.
Since virtually all biological molecules can be linked with tiny metal
radio antenna crystals, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology in Cambridge, Mass., say radio frequency biology in the future
may help control a wide range of biological processes electronically.
"Regulation of biomolecules using electronic radio frequency control
represents a new dimension in biology," said researcher Shuguang
Zhang, associate director of MIT's Center for Biomedical Engineering.
"Radio frequency biology provides us with some extraordinary tools
and with unprecedented precision."
The scientists attached tiny radio-frequency antennas -- gold crystals
made up of less than 100 atoms -- to DNA. When a radio-frequency magnetic
field is transmitted into the tiny antennas, the molecules the crystals
are attached to are zapped with energy.
"It's a really simple technique -- it's really just working by
heat," said lead researcher Kim Hamad-Schifferli in an interview with
United Press International. "It's just that the tools we've decided
to use make it such that you can localize the heat."
The radio technique can unzip double-stranded DNA in a matter of seconds,
a reversible process that leaves neighboring molecules untouched. It may
one day prove possible to hook the antennas into living systems and
control DNA
via electronic switches, the scientists say.
"It's clever to find a way to bridge two very different worlds -- the
biochemical world of nucleic acids and the physical world of
electromagnetic waves," commented biochemist Gerald Joyce of the
Scripps Institute in La Jolla, Calif. "You can even start to think of
differential receivers -- different radio receivers that respond
differently to different frequencies. By dialing in
the right frequency, you can turn on tags on one part of DNA but not other
tags."
The crystals -- each no larger than nanometers or billionths of a meter --
can be attached to proteins as well as DNA. This
opens up the possibility of controlling more complex biological processes
such as enzymatic activity, protein folding and biomolecular
assembly.
"There are already numerous examples of nanocrystals attached to
biological systems for the purpose of sensing," Schifferli said.
"However, we hadn't come across any examples where they are used as a
means of controlling the biology. We feel that's what's new about our
work."
Ultimately, cell component functions and the cell life cycle itself may be
electronically regulated using radio waves, said researcher Joseph
Jacobson, head of the MIT Media Lab's molecular machines group. Biological
machines may one day be used to perform computation, assemble computer
components or become part of computer hardware or circuitry.
"If we're interested in molecular-scale machines, biology is a
wonderful place to start," Jacobson said. "Manipulation of DNA
is interesting because it has been shown recently that is has potential as
an actuator -- a hard drive component -- and can be used to perform
computational operations."
Exquisitely fine electronic control of biology also will likely become
more and more important in dissecting intricate molecular interactions and
formations in great detail. There is currently no way to achieve this fine
control over one molecule without disturbing its neighbors.
"The development of molecular biology has witnessed many examples of
ways to design new tools that accelerated uncovering nature's
secrets," Zhang said. "These new tools and technologies will
undoubtedly accelerate and advance our knowledge in finest detail. It not
only opens new avenues for us to ask big and deep questions but also to
attain the ultimate answers in biology."
The researchers reported their findings in Nature.

Movies like RoboCop, AI and numerous sci-fi movies are already striking a path for
cyborgs. Because of the perfect relevance mentioned in the bible they will
cleverly enlist the help of some Christians renegades and other misled ones to
endorse this chip and thereby induce other shaky ones to do the same. This is
just one millionth of the story put across. Once your 666 chip is blacklisted
your very movement will be hampered and you will be treated like a mechanical
robot whose circuits have gone awry. In effect man is no longer a man with love
and feeling but just a number in a computer.
The dignity
of the human being created in God's Image will be reduced to below that of
an animal. With metal and substances embedded into the body his soul will cry
out in anguish with the wanton confusion. And who do you think will reply - None
but the Third Anti-Christ who will portray himself as the new Messiah. But his reign
will last for a very short time and will be vanquished by Christ Himself.

years the human mind has been programmed using various methods and the Hoi
Polloi or the mass of the people has been transformed into wildebeest and
unthinking media controlled robots. They will do what the media wants and when
it wants. They can make these people believe that the moon is a ball of cheese
and they would believe it. Advertising and the movies with their special effects
are controlling the minds of these people so powerfully that their minds will be
distorted perfectly to accept the Anti-Christ and his mark. Since the reference
itself has been moved those who are not aligned with the truth will appear to be
normal and those who are normal will be portrayed as abnormal. This fact can
already be seen in nowadays teenagers, in their language, demeanor, behaviour
and values.
There is only one
reference point and that is God. The other virtual reference point is that set
up by the freemasonry and is what the larger part of the world follows. Both
points are exactly opposite, one is the highest standard of purity the other,
the perfect standard of corruption and decay. Those who are tuned to fads will
fall first, take the mobile phone for example it was more a status symbol than a
communication device.

APPLIED DIGITAL SOLUTIONS is launching a new line of
products
under the "Digital Angel" name that allow the monitoring of a
person's
whereabouts
and vital statistics. The company began testing the devices last
month and
is launching a national campaign in southern Florida.
The devices will cost around $299 each, with monthly services fees of between $30 to $40, according to the South Saint
Paul,
Minn., company.
The Digital Angel products
combine biosensors to track data such as heart rate, blood oxygen levels and body
temperature
with a global
positioning system tracker. They're available in watch and pager
designs.
Although the
devices may evoke images of George Orwell's Big
Brother, the company says the products could be used to keep track
of
pets, small children or adults with health concerns such as
Alzheimer's disease.
The Digital Angel devices
also include alert buttons that can
summon caregivers and emergency personnel. One of the devices
aimed at the senior market includes a "sudden fall
sensor," which uses inertial data to
monitor whether someone has fallen down .
Future products will be able
to monitor blood chemistry, blood
pressure and other indicators of health, the company said.

A New Jersey surgeon has embedded under his skin tiny computer chips
that can automatically transmit personal information to a scanner, a
technology that his employer hopes will someday be widely used as a way
to identify people.
One bioethicist called the procedure the stuff of science fiction. The
chip, developed by Applied Digital Solutions of Palm Beach, Fla., is
similar to that implanted in more than a million dogs, cats and other
pets in recent years to track and identify them.
The new chip measures slightly smaller than a Tic Tac mint and has a
miniature antenna that emits signals containing about two paragraphs
worth of data when scanned by a handheld reader.
The device must undergo clinical trials and be approved by the Food and
Drug Administration before it can be marketed, first to patients with
other implanted medical devices, such as pacemakers.
The surgeon, who said he implanted the device in his hip and one arm in
September, asked not to be named because he worries about the attention
his initiative will draw. He said he decided to test the chip himself
after seeing rescuers at the World Trade Center disaster site write
their names and Social Security numbers on their arms so they could be
identified in case they were injured or killed at the site.
Applied Digital has high hopes for the technology, in part because it is
struggling financially and recently fell behind on loans from one of its
major creditors. Its stock, which trades on the Nasdaq Stock Market, was
as high as $3 in the past year. It closed at 38 cents yesterday.
Company officials said they hope to sell the device to patients with
pacemakers, artificial hips and other implanted devices. The idea is
that the chip will provide prompt and accurate medical information in
the event of an emergency, they said.
The signal can contain a name, telephone number and other information.
Or it can send out a code that, when linked to a database, can call up
records. The scanner can read it through clothes from up to four feet
away, company officials said.
Applied Digital executives said its new product also could serve as a
tamper-proof form of identification. Corrections authorities have
expressed interest in using the chips to better identify prisoners and
parolees, officials said.
Airlines, nuclear power plants and other sensitive facilities may want
to use the chips for employees, they said. Some parents may consider
embedding chips in young children or elderly relatives who may not be
able to say their names, addresses or telephone numbers.
"It depends on the spirit of the marketplace and the demand,"
said Keith Bolton, the company's vice president and chief technology
officer, adding that use of the chip should be voluntary unless the law
allows otherwise. "We're ready to begin."
Some medical and technology specialists said the device raises new
questions about the nexus of humans and computer technology. And it
could pose ethical or privacy dilemmas if implanted against someone's
wishes, or if it exposes personal information to prying eyes.
Thomas Murray, president of the Hastings Center, a bioethics research
institute in New York, said the chip "evokes images of science
fiction."
"We need to consider carefully the broader implications,"
Murray said. "Alongside the possible benefits, it has the potential
to be misused by forces who do not have your interests at heart."
Although the system has been in development for a couple of years,
company officials said they were uneasy about implanting the chips in
people until recently, fearing there might be a backlash from civil
libertarians and others.
On Sept. 16, the doctor, using a local anesthetic, used a syringe-like
device to insert the chips under the skin of his forearm. He followed
the same procedure to implant the chip on his hip.
The chip is coated with a substance that encourages the body to hold it
in place, he said. After just over two weeks, all signs of the procedure
were gone. "After that, it was like nothing had happened," the
physician said. "I felt it was important enough to do, that I took
responsibility myself."
Airports are beginning to use similar micro-devices to improve security
by tagging bags with more detailed instructions about how they're to be
handled and screened. Automakers are installing the chips in keys to
deter auto theft. Libraries are beginning to use the technology to track
books.
Three years ago, a British cybernetics researcher had a chip temporarily
implanted to allow a computer to track his movements in a university
building.
"The computer has jumped off our desktops and it is insinuating
itself into every corner of our lives. Now it's finding its way into our
bodies," said Paul Saffo, director of the Institute for the Future
in Menlo Park, Calif. "This stuff is going to happen. These guys
are the start."

A Chip ID That's Only Skin-Deep
Biotech: Firm plans to sell implantable devices that can store a variety
of data about you.

By DAVID STREITFELD -- A Florida company is poised to become the first
to sell microchips designed to be implanted into human beings, an
achievement that opens the door to new systems of medical monitoring and
ID screening.
Implantable chips have long been discussed by technologists and
denounced by those who object on religious grounds or fear their use by
a totalitarian state. But the company that did the test, Applied Digital
Solutions of Palm Beach, said the specter of terrorism is shifting
attitudes. The direct union of man and computer is no longer dismissed
out of hand.
"The bottom line is, when people are trying to regain their peace
of mind, they're more open to new approaches," said Keith Bolton,
Applied Digital's chief technology officer.
Applied Digital, which had revenue of $165 million last year, has made
its mark by selling electronic chips that help farmers keep tabs on the
health and safety of their cows and other livestock. The company also
makes a monitoring bracelet for Alzheimer patients, so that families can
use global positioning satellite systems to help find loved ones who
might have wandered off.
Now the company sees a market among those who have artificial organs and
limbs. These folks will have up to 60 words of relevant medical
information implanted on chips. If the patients are brought unconscious
into an emergency room, technicians equipped with special scanners will
easily decipher the body's internal topography.
The chips would need approval from the Food and Drug Administration,
which Applied Digital said it expects to receive by midyear. The company
said it already has secured permission from the Federal Communications
Commission--necessary because the chips use radio frequencies.
Regulatory approval is not necessary overseas, however. Applied Digital
expects to be selling chips in South America in about 90 days. One
potential market is kidnap targets, who could use these chips in
combination with global positioning devices.
Other potential applications would put the chips in the role of an
ultimate ID, capable of performing many of the roles that are performed
by keys and ATM cards.
"I'd be shocked if within 10 years you couldn't get a chip
implanted that would unlock your house, start your car and give you
money," said Chris Hables Gray, an associate professor of computer
science at the University of Great Falls in Montana and author of
"The Cyborg Citizen."
English cyberneticist Kevin Warwick won considerable notoriety three
years ago by implanting an electronic transmitter above his left elbow.
The implant opened doors and switched on lights at his British
University of Reading offices. He now is working on experiments in which
his nervous system is linked with a computer.
If Warwick is the equivalent of the mad genius who injects himself with
a new vaccine to see whether it works, the Applied Digital volunteer,
55-year-old New Jersey surgeon Richard Seelig, sees himself as simply a
consultant thrust by events into an unexpected role.
Seelig had been working with Applied Digital since early this year. He
expected to do a traditional scientific study, calling for volunteers
who wanted to test out the role of chip implants. Then came the
terrorist attacks Sept. 11. Five days later, Seelig injected himself
with the chips.
"I was so compelled by what had happened," he said in a phone
interview. "One of the potential applications suddenly jumped
out--the ability to have a secure form of identification--and I felt I
had to take the next step."
So he injected one chip into his left forearm; the other went in his
right leg, next to his artificial hip. Each could hold several sentences
of information, although at the moment they just contain serial numbers.
"There's no deformity of the skin," Seelig said. "I feel
just the same as I did before."
The chips that will be marketed next year are not true tracking devices.
For one thing, they have no internal power source. Their data can't be
read without a scanner.
The next generation of body chips, which transmits signals from a
distance, is still several years away. At the moment, this kind of
tracking device would have to be about 1 inch by 1 inch, raising the
likelihood of a rather unsightly bulge.
Applied Digital has a market value of 95 million. Its shares closed
unchanged Tuesday at 38 cents on Nasdaq.
No one interviewed Tuesday questioned that Applied Digital had done what
it said it did, but not everyone thought there would be a huge market.
"It's a glorified bar code, and there are not a lot of people who
are going to want it," said Michael Nova, the founder of Graviton,
a La Jolla company developing wireless machine-to-machine communication
systems. Using such a chip as a built-in credit card, Nova said, would
require a great deal of work.
"Stores would have to get the right software; credit card companies
would have to want to do it," Nova said. "At the moment, this
is an intriguing idea that doesn't have a market."
Which isn't necessarily going to keep it from being popular, said
futurist Paul Saffo.
"As some people wring their hands about the invasion of privacy and
civil liberty, a whole other generation is going to go, 'Cool! I've
always wanted to embed technology in my body.' It's going to be
fashion," Saffo said. "One sure sign that teenagers will love
it is if it terrifies their parents."

This is really eerie, okay! It has a doom style format and you can

are the names of the tortured souls....now walk up the stairs and then come back

blank wall to reveal another secret passage, walk through the passage and do not
fall off. This is difficult to do. When you get to the end you will
see something really, really eerie.
As of this point in time, countless witnesses all over the world have
verified that it is a real eye opener. It could be a joke by MS
programmers. Or is it? Would it be too surprising if Bill Gates was
the AntiChrist? After all, the bible foretold that someone powerful would rise
up and lead the world to destruction. And Bill Gates definitely has this
kind of power in his hands.
More than 80% of computers in the world today run on windows and DOS
(including those at the Pentagon). If all of his products have some kind
of small program embedded, like this "hall of tortured souls", that
can give him control to set off nuclear arsenals, create havoc in security
systems and financial systems all over the world, etc. All from his
headquarters.
This isn't too far from reality. Just by using the Internet Explorer may
just allow him to map out what you have on your computer bit by bit each time
you log on. Perhaps the end of time is near and this is just the tip of
the iceberg?

necessity today for doing business?

Here is something to ponder. Isn't everything going towards the
Internet? (i.e., buying, selling, business transactions) Isn't Microsoft
always on the move to have a monopoly when it comes to software technology?
And now the Internet?
Revelations also says that the mark of the beast will be carved on one's
hand and on one's forehead. If the Internet would indeed be the beast,
aren't we all starting to carry it on our hands and foreheads?
The screen is the forehead and the hand uses the mouse. Are things finally
starting to fall into place or are we just letting our imagination run?
Remember, the devil came to cheat, steal and to destroy. So, be vigilant about
