A FAN'S PAGE

Sports fans can be characterized as Couch Potatoes and other derogatory and cute names.  I prefer to think of my sports fanaticism as an expression of avid interest and loyalty.  I'm not sure you can be passionate about too many things.

My number one avid interest and loyalty is to my undergraduate college's athletic programs, the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  They warrant their own site(s).

This site is aimed at the professional sports programs of Northern California.

The Niners have provided us with a great deal of great entertainment since we moved to Northern California in 1984.  Actually, we were Niner fans prior to the move based on other connections to the Bay Area.  We've attend three or four home games a year and have made it to several playoff games - when that used to happen.

We enjoyed a hell-of-a run by the Niners.  Now we are patiently waiting with the rest of the Bay Area to see if they can regain some of that lost luster.

I was a Kansas City Royals fan when we lived in Omaha and followed the AL West closely so the A's were no strangers when we moved west.  I kept one eye on the Royals up until George Brett's retirement, then became a 100% A's fan.  They too, have given us a couple of good runs.  The current crop of youngsters on the team makes us very optimistic for the future of this franchise.
The Warriors inflict almost unbearable pain on their fans.  I'd like to see an All-Star game between ex-Warriors and the rest of the NBA.  It would be competitive and those stars who have left the Bay Area just might win such a match.

The team is often entertaining, but seldom has offered much hope for meaningful success.  The storied days of the Warriors are way back in ancient history.

I admit it.  I've never been to a Raiders' game, and may never.  I followed the Chiefs some when in Omaha, so the Raiders were a rival.  Al Davis did his LA thing then came back to Oakland under peculiar arrangements with the city and county.  Then the Raiders dictated major changes to the Coliseum that really mucked up the park for the Athletics.  And the fans are atrocious.  (see Giants)
For some reason, Bay Area fans generally fall into two camps.  A's and Niner fans in one camp, Giants and Raiders in the other.  Yes that's Oakland/SF and SF/Oakland.  I speak poorly of Raiders fans mainly from second-hand reports.  I speak poorly of Giants fans from intimate knowledge.  I'm speaking of the fans that populated Candlestick.  I haven't been to the new park.  Maybe civilization has broken out there.  Candlestick Giants fans were the most foul-mouthed, belligerent and rude people I've ever encountered on a regular, consistent basis.  I took my daughters to Candlestick only twice, and I don't know why there was a second time.  I was embarrassed by the barnyard language from actual adult-looking morons.  I feared for our safety with fist fights breaking out all around throughout the games.  And we were taunted by these cretins for not joining in their "fun".  A real ugly experience.  Hopefully the new park will attract a better clientele and the summer Candlestick crowd is off on some South Sea island playing amateur "Survivor" with no out-bound boat.

One could watch them on TV or listen on the radio except that their long-time announcers are not the best.   And it's the NL.

Hockey enthusiasm was something to see when the Sharks arrived ten years ago.  Much of that enthusiasm has been sustained throughout.  The franchise has not been extremely successful, but have made a noise in the playoffs a few times and always seem to offer an entertaining game.
The Kings are included in an otherwise more specific Bay Area list as we live in Tracy, about 65 miles east-southeast of San Francisco and also about 70 miles south of Sacramento.  And also because when we lived in Omaha, I had "season" tickets most years for the seven games a year that the then-Kansas City Kings played at the Civic Auditorium in Omaha.  I remember driving those icy streets in January to take in a game, walking several blocks in an otherwise deserted downtown.

Being on the "fringe" of the Bay Area and Sacrmento TV markets, we are almost never blacked out and see most of these games.
