Are you a social worker or other human services provider serving a clientele with a large number of
African Americans?
And are you among the majority of human services professionals who are white?
If so, chances are that you have had your fair share of confusion, miscommunication, and frustration
when trying to communicate with, motivate, and understand black clients.
If you don't see many black
clients, most likely you are not in a large urban center. And if you have had no problems with black
clients in your social services work (especially if you are white)...you have been very fortunate.
This site is designed to serve two key purposes:
> Help you understand why black clients may
be reluctant to open up or to trust non-black (especially white) human services providers
> Provide
you with tips about how communications styles differ between blacks and whites, so that you can get off
on the right foot with African-American clients.
Use the buttons to the left or the links below
to move through the various social, governmental, historical, commucations and other topics relevant
to serving black social serice clients. It is recommended (though not required) that you review the areas
in the order that they appear.
