__Alaska is a land of contrast and extremes, of rare beauty and big distances. It is the largest state of this country by far,
but it is also the least populated. It is one of the two newest states, it was also the first place populated in North America.
Although about a third of Alaska lies above the Artic Circle, the Aleutian Islands nearly reach the same latitude as Seatle.
Anchorage is due north of Hawaii. Mainland Alaska comes within a few miles of Russia. The state covers so much area
that it has both temperature rain forest and frozen deserts. Extreme winter snow measurements have varied from 3 inches
to 1,000 feet. Alaska has Mount McKinley, the highest point in North America, as well as the Aleutian Trench, where the
Pacific Plate folds under the North American plate, setting off volcanoes and earthquakes. The Aleutian Trench is nearly
as deep as Mount McKinley is high. In the cities, such as Anchorage, there are world-class hotels, restaurants, museums,
and plenty of spotlights. In the remote villages, people still keep many traditions of their ancestors. The small villages don't
even have cars. Few roads connect town to town. Much of the travel throughout the state is done by plane.
