Tutorial

01Take any image you've drawn, be it a doodle or something more refined, and scan it at at least double the final image resolution. In most cases, the final resolution will be 72 Dots Per Inch. So scan the image at at least 144DPI. My scanner doesn't want to play nice, and only lets me select 150DPI as the closest approximation. You can scan it as whatever mode you want (Color, Black and White, Line Art), but Black and White is what I used here.
02As you can see, the initial input can be as messy as this sketch of Furball and Rita. We'll be cleaning it up in Photoshop. The important thing is to have a general idea for the finished picture. I have a Wacom Artpad, so I can "ink" the pencil sketch digitally. A close up of the scanned piece reveals how dirty (besides subject matter, that is) it is: stray lines, abandoned paths, out of proportion parts, etc. That will all be fixed thanks to the magic of Layers, and the Artpad.
