The Jane Schaffer Model of Writing Format

 

INTRODUCTORY
Paragraph

These are the basic sections for an essay

ATTENTION-GETTER
(Anecdote, statistics, quote, rhetorical question …something to grab your audience) [Sentences = 1-3]

Transitional Sentence*
Makes a smooth move from the Attention Getter section into next section [Sentences = 1-3]

Author/Book Information OR Topic section
(Let the reader know where you obtained your information. Could be a section of what is the topic of the essay) [Sentences = 1-2]

Background
Summary (On the topic) [Sentences = 3-4]

THESIS Statement
(One sentence only & last sentence of paragraph…remember the reader should be able to tell the A, B, & C (topics) of your paper.)

BODY
Paragraphs
(Follow this format for all your body paragraphs)

Topic Sentence
Lets your audience know what your are going to discuss in that paragraph only [Sentences = 1-3]

Transitional Sentence*
Sets-up the reader by giving them important info as to what happened before the CD. [Sentences = 1-2]

CONCRETE DETAIL #1
A FACT that is a quote or paraphrase, that is used to back up your Thesis Statement. Must be cited to avoid plagiarism.

COMMENTARY #1
About CD #1
(Elaborate on the CD, but don’t restate the CD) [Sentences = 1-3]

COMMENTARY #2
About CD #1
(Go beyond the text, but make sure there is relation to the topic of the CD) [Sentences = 1-3]

Transitional Sentence*
Sets-up the reader by giving them important info as to what happened before the CD. [Sentences = 1-2]
