Our Country

A history of the united States of America.

The history titled Our Country is a series of six books. For several years, this web page has contained a text passage of those six books. Unfortunately these documents were the work of an unknown individual and not proof read after scanning and conversion to text. Consequently, they contained many, many errors. However, the history itself is extraordinary. In an effort to provide the interested reader of history with an error free (as much as that is possible) version of these series of books, I have acquired the entire series (my version published in 1895) and have undertaken the process of document recovery. I am now retired and this is what might be termed a cottage industry. Thus far, I have completed the recovery of the first two books.  Book I: Discoveries. Book II: Settlements.

The books include the drawings and graphics of the published version. These graphic images are excellent and along with the excellent writing style, brings history to life. It reads like an adventure of the highest quality. It is not a chore to read this history, it is captivating. The history to which I was exposed in public schools was so sanitary that it conveyed very little. As a result I had little interest and no attachment or bond to those who had sacrificed so much for my freedom. But with the reading of this history, I have gained a connection to those of the past, and what they gave and lost for my benefit. I see so much more clearly their courage and character.

For example, until reading this history, I was not aware that Columbus had been returned from Hispaniola to Sapin in chains. That the royalty of Spain wholly neglected their agreements (contracts) with Columbus and he died in poverty and obscurity. What makes this history so valuable is that it connects the reader to the events and to the people of the past. The publishing of this history began in 1876 and my version was printed in 1895, making this a non-revisionist history. It is also not a history written to be politically correct. It is just an honest presentation from the documents available and the chronicles kept. And it truly reads like an adventure... it is alive.

The six books are as follows:
1.    DISCOVERIES
2.    SETTLEMENTS
3.    COLONIES
4.    THE WAR FOR INDEPENDENCE
5.    THE NATION
6.    THE CIVIL WAR; or THE SOCIAL REVOLUTION

Thus far (June 2008), the first two books have been recovered (Discoveries & Settlements). They have been proof read and errors corrected. The reader may notice some spelling that is not correct, but the spelling presented is that of the original text, which adds to the character of the book and the time in which it was printed. In an effort to provide the reader with an exposure to the richness of the material, I have made available chapter 5 of Discoveries for viewing and it may be viewed by clicking here. This chapter is about 4.8 megs and may take a while to download if you are using a dialup modem.
