Game Review

HCS played a tough second round Div VAA playoff game against La Sierra Academy in Riverside and won 63-58. It was the toughest win for Hesperia Christian all season. The first half was even with HCS taking a three point lead in the first quarter 15-12 and maintaining that lead to the half, 27-24. The second half was a seesaw affair with the lead switching several times. La Sierra's big man, Giorgio Zamorano was scoring at will inside and HCS seemed to have no answer for him. At one point late in the third quarter, La Sierra got 6 points up on HCS. In the final two minutes of the third quarter, HCS made some stops and some steals and finished the quarter ahead 46-40. It was one of HCS' best runs of the season. Aaron Garcia played an important part in this run, making a critical three.

HCS fought hard in the fourth quarter to maintain that lead but La Sierra's three point shooters, Anthony Paschal, Mike Trinidad and JP Bullon made a couple to pull within one point. in the final two minutes of play, the HCS players showed great character as they fought to save the win. With a minute left, Trevor Wagstaffe got a critical rebound surrounded by four La Sierra players. At about 25 seconds left, Jesse McDonald made the critical defensive steal of the night as La Sierra was fast breaking down court. A pass to Aja Ajanwachuku for a slash two points put HCS up 61-58 with about 20 secopnds left. Important timeouts by the HCS coaches settled the Patriots for a wild last twenty seconds. HCS played twenty seconds of very tough defense which stymied La Sierra. Loren Barton would not allow them to get the ball into Zamorano and none of their shooters could get open. It was HCS' best defense of the season. Finally with about ten seconds left McDonald got the ball and rushed down court only to be fouled. Jesse took the ball out of bounds and saw a breaking Josh Hamilton heading to the hoop. He made the pass and Josh made the basket to seal the victory. HCS is now 19-7 (8-2) (2-0) and will meet the winner of Friday night's game between Linfield Christian and Rolling Hills Prep. If Rolling Hills Prep wins the game will be in Hesperia. If Linfield wins there will be a coin toss to determine the location of this quarterfinal game.

Game Preview

Tonight Hesperia Christian boys continue the road to Arco Arena and the CIF State Championships. They finished the season 17-7 (8-2). They have only lost two games in 2003, both times to #2 Apple Valley Christian. They have not lost a game this season in which they lead in the first quarter. HCS is lead by Aja Ajanwachuku 30 ppg, Josh Hamilton 25 ppg, and Jesse McDonald 17 ppg. Loren Barton holds down the paint and is the leading rebounder on the team and second leading shot blocker behind McDonald. Barton is the leading shot blocker during the playoffs. Junior point guard Trevor Wagstaffe leads the offensive attack for the Patriots and leads the team in rebounds and assists for the playoffs. Aaron Garcia is a strong six man for the team. Josh Martinson, although 6' is a strong rebounder spelling Barton. Bryan Glass is the other six man and can hit the three as well as anyone on the team. He also slashes well to the hoop. Danny Marriott and Bryant Baum come in and are the two best free throw shooters on the team. Steve Pappas is a strong point backup to Wagstaffe. La Sierra Academy was undefeated in Arrowhead League play and was 20-5 overall. This game will be their first playoff game as they received a bye in the first round. They are allegedly a good outside shooting team so HCS' defensive rotation has got to be on. HCS cannot afford to leave anyone open as they have often this season including leaving AAE star Kevin Roy open for 5 three pointers (all uncontested) last night. So La Sierra Academy will be a worthy opponent for HCS. The HCS press will do damage to La Sierra Academy with their press and three point shooting. HCS rebounding will have to improve to pull off the victory tonight.
