Game Review

In a hard fought contest in Lancaster, Hesperia Christian dropped a heartbreaker to Antelope Valley Christian, #3 in Div VA, 71-68. Both teams played even in the first and fourth quarters. HCS took the second quarter 21-15 but again had a poor third quarter losing to the Eagles 21-13. Antelope Valley Christian shot a torrid 70% FG percentage. Because they missed so little, they only got 19 rebounds but outrebounded HCS in the fourth quarter with 10 rebounds when it counted most. Mistakes were made in the fourth quarter. AJ Armstrong was fouled with about a minute and ten seconds left when the game was tied 68-68 and ANVC was in the bonus. The two seniors, Trevor Wagstaffe and Josh Hamilton missed good opportunities in the final two minutes to tie the game. Billy Hague took a three pointer with 10 seconds left from the NBA three line but missed. Senior Sam Sullivan forego a three pointer in the final three seconds and passed the ball to Hamilton as time expired. It was good to have a tight game as playoff games often go that way. The coaching staff just has to drill the team harder on dos and donts in final minutes. Players need to understand when to foul and when not to. There needs to be preset practiced final minute and final second plays that are well-thought out and practiced often. They may have these but it was not evident last night. The team needs to practice some picks and screens to get players open in the end. But this is all part of the learning curve for a young team and young coaching staff.

There were some good notes from this game. HCS shot their best of the season from the free throw line, a scorching 80%. Wagstaffe seems to have gotten his shooting eye back. Hamilton used good shot selection last night shooting 64% from the field. Nate Glass got 8 rebounds and 8 points. Billy Hague played a good game despite a chipped tooth, taking a charge from Jeremiah Nurse. Sullivan came off the bench and provided 5 vital points.

Unfortunately it was not Loren Barton or Mike Petersen's best nights. Barton fouled out with two minutes left in the fourth quarter when he was critically needed. Petersen had 2 points and 2 rebounds. The team had an abysmal 27 rebounds, continuing the streak of losing every game they don't get more than 27 rebounds. Every Patriot had at least 2 turnovers except for Sean Bayer and Sullivan who both had one turnover in short playing time. They had no real answer for Romantique Talton who had 23 points, 3 points above his average. The entire Eagle starting five scored in double figures. The problem with last night's game was that HCS now needs help from ANVC to get a tie in the Agape League title. ANVC needs to beat Apple Valley Christian on Thursday and then HCS needs to beat both AVC and ANVC, a tough task although fully possible. HCS is now 3-2 in league and 12-7 overall. They play Victor Valley Christian on Friday at Hesperia.

Game Preview
CIF Div VAA #5 Hesperia Christian plays their cross valley arch rival, CIF Div VA #3 Antelope Valley Christian at their home gym. These games are always exciting and always unpredictable. This game is no different. The Eagles barely lost to Apple Valley Christian a week ago 55-51 while the Patriots lost to the Warriors 63-52. Antelope has picked up three solid transfers from Highland High. Julian Doster is one of the leaders in steals in Socal with almost 5 steals a game. Romantique Talton was named to the All-tourney team at the prestigious Laguna Blanca Tournament and he scored 33 points against Victor Valley Christian. Talton is averaging over 20 points a game. Simply Loren Barton and Nate Glass stop him or HCS loses. HCS cannot lose another game this season to take the Agape League championship, one of their major goals this year. Can Josh Hamilton score 20 points without shooting 40% or less from the field? Can Trevor Wagstaffe avoid turnovers and score 12 points? Can Wagstaffe and Hague and Hamilton get the ball into the big men unlike the Apple game where they failed miserably in the second half in doing that. And will the HCS big men actually get open to get a ball? Will Billy Hague be able to play solid defense against their guard and still make about 10-12 points and keep his outstanding steal record up? Will Mike Petersen play well and get his 10 points and 10 rebounds? Will the second team players come in and make contributions and not make turnovers? All this has to happen to succeed in Antelope Valley. This potentially outstanding team from Hesperia needs to rachet their game up now and start to get ready for a championship run. Do they have championship hearts or are they just another decent HCS team playing out another season as HCS has for the last four or five seasons with unfulfilled potential?
