Game Review
HCS clinched sole possession of second place in the Agape League with its 84-63 win over Joshua Springs in Hesperia. Although the Lightning went up 4-0 early, HCS quickly took over and went ahead 26-17 by the end of the first quarter. By the half the Patriots were up 47- 35. Both Nathan Rynning and Josh Wagner, stars of Joshua Springs were in foul trouble with three fouls each. Aja Ajanwachuku and Jesse McDonald lead the team this evening ending up with 27 and 26 points respectively. In the third quarter, the Patriots put away Joshua Springs as much as HCS is capable of putting a team away with a third quarter score of 21-9. In the fourth quarter, Joshua Springs made a run well after the game was over winning the quarter 19-16. Aaron Garcia had one of his best games of the year scoring 9 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. McDonald was on all evening pulling down 15 rebounds for his double double. Jesse also shot 7/8 from the charity line while Aja shot 4/5. This helped HCS shoot 80% from the free throw line, a critical stat as HCS moves into the playoffs next week. Also of note was the fact that HCS only had 15 turnovers tonight five below their TO average per game. Trevor Wagstaffe had one of his best games of the season, scoring six points and controlling the pace of the game particularly in the fourth quarter, a quarter he rarely plays in. Overall HCS demonstrated that they can be a real threat to opponents in the playoffs. And all this was despite missing Josh Hamilton, #2 Patriot scorer and Coach Lester Simpson. Both were out with the flu along with top free throw shooter Bryant Baum. The only flaws tonight were allowing Nathan Rynning to get 27 points and a failure to foul out either Wagner nor Rynning, a skill HCS has failed to demonstrate all season long. HCS now will face Victor Valley Christian Friday night in a league finale. On a final note congratulations are in order for Asst Coach Scot Dobyns on his first ever varsity high school victory!
Game Preview
Hesperia Christian will face the fourth place Lightning of Joshua Springs this Tuesday night in Hesperia. HCS is now 6-2 and alone in second place in the Agape League. A win tonight will clinch a second place finish for the Patriots. HCS has lost only two games in 2003, both to Apple Valley Christian. Tonight the Patriots will need to start sharpening their skills for the playoffs. They can start by improving their miserable free throw shooting percentage of 50% last game. They also need to start getting off to a great first quarter start. HCS has not lost a single game this season that they won the first quarter. CIF ranks the Patriots #7 in the last Div VAA poll.
