Somatotropin

Somatotropin (Human Growth Hormone, hGH, or GH) is produced by the Pituitary gland. We have lots of it as children, but its level decreases rapidly around age 18 - which is why we stop getting taller near that age.

Children with a deficiency of GH don't get very big, and the medical condition is called Dwarfism. Those with an excess of GH get very big, and the medical condition is called Gigantism.

Children with Dwarfism may receive GH injections and they will grow up to a "normal" height. Until twenty-or-so years ago, the only source of GH was to distill it out of (dead people's) pituitary glands at a cost of $1000 per drop!

Then Eli Lilly, Inc. made GH in the laboratory through the agency of gene-splicing bacteria. Take a pot and fill it with these bacteria; add one drop of GH, and the bacteria duplicate it until [essentially] you have a pot full of recombinant GH.

The above description is simplified so that you get the general idea. It is not biochemically precise. Do not attempt this procedure in your kitchen.

GH also rebuilds broken-down tissues, even later in life. But as we age, we have less GH and consequently our bodies break down faster and faster until death occurs.

With the advent of recombinant GH, a medical study in aging was performed by the Veterans Administration (VA). They knew that aging leads to thinner skin and the conversion of muscle to fat. So they measured these factors in a group of elderly men, injected them with GH, and (Lo and Behold!) all of the men developed thicker skin and (without special exercise or diet) they all lost fat and gained muscle mass !

Then they (the VA) published their results in the New England Journal of Medicine - the most prestigious medical publication in the United States.

Whatever gets published in the Journal tends to become part of the "cutting edge" of medicine.

The immediate reaction [among the medical community] was mixed and controversial. Some doctors, however, simply went to Mexico and opened an anti-aging clinic. Wealthy (or at least "well-off") patients flew to Mexico for two weeks, learned how to inject themselves, and returned home with a three-month supply of GH and a box of syringes. When they ran low, they just ordered more (from Mexico).

Anyone can legally import a 3-month supply of any pharmaceutical for personal use only as long as a (foreign or domestic) Doctor has written a prescription. Only the "well-off" could afford this treatment - The cost (circa 1991) was around $1000 per month.

Virtually all the older women who went to Mexico had the same leading question: "Will it make me look younger?" And the older men had their own leading question: "Will it improve my sex drive?" The answer to both questions was: "Yes."

Palm Springs Life Extension Institute

By 1993, the controversy was expiring and medical clinics in the United States were offering GH injections. At that time, your editor was affiliated [as staff acupuncturist] with the Life Extension Institute in Palm Springs, California, where the doctor was administering GH injections.

NOTE: There are many elderly, wealthy people living in or near Palm Springs.

And then there came the Oral Spray. Various products containing growth factors that increase GH levels are now available to spray under the tongue (sublingual administration). Based on your editor's experience, and the experience(s) of his patients, these products work !

With the new oral sprays, the cost is now less than $100 per month.

The Benefits of GH

There have been many studies on the effects of HGH. If we summarize all the studies that have been done on HGH injections you get the following list of benefits: *

Background Information

Questions and Answers

What role does HGH play in our bodies?

Human growth hormone has been shown to play a significant role in:

Basically, anything that goes on in your body is in some way tied to HGH. This is why HGH is often called the "fountain of youth." Elevated HGH levels are what makes you feel young again.

Do our bodies always produce HGH?

The good news is that our bodies must always produce HGH or we would not be able to function. The bad news is that after we pass 20 years of age, our bodies produce less and less HGH each year. By age 60, our HGH level will only be about 25% of our youthful level.

At 20 years of age, we average 500 micrograms/day
At 40 years of age, we average 200 micrograms/day
At 80 years of age, we average 25 micrograms/day

Why does the body produce less HGH as we get older?

This is the really big question. It ties directly into the even bigger question - Is aging a preventable disease? People all believe that as we get older our body wears out. The theory is that all of our organs, tissues, muscles, and bones have a limited life span and will get weaker with age. If someone at 40 complains that they can't do what they did at 20, we accept this as a natural process.

HGH Research indicates that aging may be somewhat preventable. Like the ancient Taoists in China, we may not achieve immortality, but we may receive a dose of longevity. The research indicates that our bodies are as capable at 40 of having the same makeup as we did at 20.

It was believed that the pituitary gland just didn't have the ability to produce large amounts of HGH as we get older. However, recent studies have shown that aging pituitary glands are capable of producing as much HGH as young pituitary glands, if adequately stimulated. This shows that the somatotrophe cell, the cell in the pituitary gland that releases HGH, does not "lose power" as we age.

So, if the problem is not in the pituitary gland, then why does HGH decrease as we age? One theory states that the pituitary gland does not "know" it should be producing more HGH. Our body has a feedback loop that says when the IGF-1 (Growth Factor) levels decrease, we produce more HGH. For some unknown reason it is suggested that this loop becomes faulty; thus the pituitary gland has a hard time receiving the production signal.

Another theory is that as we get older our Somatostatin levels increase. Somatostatin is a natural inhibitor to growth hormone. As we age, the somatostatin levels increase and this leads to a decrease in HGH.

Currently, we just have theories.

How can we maintain high HGH levels as we age?

A doctor can do regular injections of recombinant GH and it will lead to an overall increase of growth hormone in the body. Before February of 2004, recombinant GH was only available in injection form.

The 191 amino acid chain molecule hormone had (until Feb 2004) shown itself to be too delicate to be made in any oral form.

This has changed ! - See "Availabilty" below.

What effect does this increase in HGH have on the body?

Numerous studies have been done on the effects of HGH injections, with the most ground-breaking study done by Dr. Rudman (at the VA as mentioned above) and published in the New England Journal of Medicine on July 5, 1990. The Journal reported that men receiving HGH injections showed a 8.8 percent gain in lean body mass with a 14 percent loss in body fat - without any change in diet or activity! There was no change in diet or exercise !

Are there any negatives with HGH injections?

There are a few problems with HGH injections:

(1) Very Expensive
A year's supply of HGH injections can now cost $20,000! Insurance will not cover this as you are not treating a "classified disease".

(2) By Prescription Only
Recombinant GH (
Eli Lily, Inc) is a drug that is available by prescription only. Even with $20,000 a year to spend, you need to get a prescription.

(3) Possible Negative Side Effects
Anytime you introduce a large amount of a foreign hormone into the body there is the risk of side effects. In Dr. Rudman's study he found that some of the patients suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome and gynecomastia (enlarged breasts). Dr. Rudman believed that with less HGH, the side effects would go away, but tragically he died before he could test his theory.

More HGH is a good thing, but injections may be dangerous - Is there any other way to elevate HGH levels?

Welcome to the world of HGH supplements! It is clear that elevated HGH levels can have a very positive impact on just about every aspect of your life. With this information in mind, thousands of companies have scrambled to make Dietary Supplements that increase HGH levels.
