My name is Bruce Currivan. It is a great honor to run for the United States House of Representatives, 29th District (California), with the Natural Law Party. Here are some basic questions and answers about the NLP. (1) What is the Natural Law Party? The NLP is an effort to elevate politics to its highest level. It is a grass-roots movement to eliminate problem-based administration and replace it with prevention-based, science-based policies. (2) Isn't the NLP just a front for the Transcendental Meditation organization? The NLP was originally founded by practitioners of Transcendental Meditation (TM), as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It was needed because the basic goals of the TM movement (to reduce suffering in the world, elevate individuals to their highest potential, create world peace) needed another avenue to increase the speed at which they could be achieved. However, the party is open to all and only a small percentage of NLP members practice TM. The two organizations are legally separate. The NLP has become one of the fastest growing political parties worldwide because it is responding to the needs of the times. (3) Why do we need a new party? If the existing parties would adopt the NLP's ideas and scientifically proven programs (as has occurred to a limited extent already), there would no longer be a need for the NLP to exist. Until that occurs, the NLP acts as an originator of new ideas for adoption into the political process. (3) Who is Bruce Currivan? Here is a short resume: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University. Master of Science in Engineering (Information Sciences and Systems) from Princeton University. Over 25 years experience in industry as an electronics engineer. Currently Director of Systems Engineering at one of the largest and fastest-growing high-tech firms in the area. Served as Chairman of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) committee to define the physical waveforms used by high-speed cable modems. Ran for Congress with the NLP in 1996 against Tom Campbell (15th district). Married, 3 children, lives in Irvine, CA. (4) Does Bruce Currivan accept contributions from political action committees (PACs)? No, PAC money is neither solicited nor accepted. PACs don't have the right to vote in the election, so they shouldn't be allowed to influence it through large donations to candidates. (5) Does Bruce Currivan practice negative campaigning? One of the basic NLP principles is no negative campaigning. I pledge to concentrate on solutions, and not to engage in personal attacks on my opponents. (6) What is the basis for the NLP's opposition to the misuse of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)? GMOs are a new experiment that is being tried out on our food supply. While some benefits may accrue from the proper use of genetic engineering, the dangers have so far been understated by the large corporations who stand to benefit from their use. For example, when genes are spliced into the DNA of a food crop, those genes have been shown to infect neighboring crops. This constitues pollution of the gene pool to an extent never before seen. These crops, once infected with genetically modified genes, go on to reproduce with other crops, and there is no way to stop the process and recall them. Moreover, the large corporations are inventing ways to patent these genetically modified organisms and to require developing countries to use them, and to use the pesticides that are engineered to be used with the modified crops. Finally, special agricultural interests have persuaded the US government to oppose even the labeling of genetically modified foods so that consumers can make their own choices as to whether to consume these substances. See the NLP website for more information. (7) OK, I've visited the NLP web site and I agree with what the NLP is trying to do. But if I vote for NLP candidates, aren't I wasting my vote? Maybe from a narrow numerical viewpoint. But from a wider perspective, voting for one of the exising parties is a vote for more of the same. Only a new seed will produce a new crop. The Republicans and Democrats stand for the same old approaches to government. What is needed to solve our problems is a fresh perspective and programs that work (and can be proven scientifically to do so).
