My 1990 FORD TAURUS SHO

This is my 90 SHO page

UPDATES

1-14-01
Had to leave my SHO for the winter vacation:( but I got to dive my moms car. It is a 99 merc slk 230. It is pretty quick but I miss the power of my sho.

12-20-00
I put a switch put on my fan so I can turn it on my self and it just makes more switches inside from the car.

11-9-00
Had my fan replaced because my car was overheating and i didn't know what was wrong. Had the SHO shop fix it and it is better again. When they were fixing it they were dynoing a Z06 corvette and it was cool.

7-13-00
I made my own ram air on my SHO. I made it out of a shop vaccum tube and ran it from the air box all the way to the passenger side fog light hole(NOT THE FOG LIGHT HOLE BUT THE HOLE TO THE LEFT TO IT).I made the tube run all against the underside of the bumper because the air cools the tube down(LIKE A SOMEWHAT INNERCOOLER). I used a shop vaccum head as a scoop. I am not sure how much HP I gained but at high speeds it really helps. RPMS go faster at high speeds with the ram air. I also took the horn out of the box.

I first heard about this car when I wanted to by my second car. I was either thinking a celica or a Taurus sho. I picked the celica and it was alright. In the summer of 99 I sold it and got the SHO. My SHO is a really big sleeper and would kick my friends SC in a race. I am thinking of doing a lot of stuff to my car. I recommend getting most of the stuff for sho's and contour svt's there. I have a link at the bottom of the page. I will have pictures of my moded SHO later because I plan to be running 12sec in the winter. I am getting most of my parts at the SHO shop and I am planning to go down there int he summer to install the 3.6L engine. At first I was strictly planning for performance parts int he beginning but right now I am putting a system in my car because I miss bass. I will sho some pictures from the inside because I will have the most custome sho ever. I saw this article of this lady who has a SHO and her car is fast. I want to get a supercharger for my car later like in the summer of 2001

This means no burners. I hate integras with the super fart pipes and stickers thinking they will get HP from the stickers. Someone at my work thinks they can beat me in a race in an integra. One race with an integra was kind of funny. I stopped at a light with a 90 integra next to me. All o f a sudden I see a bunch of smoke come from my hood but my car wasn't overheating. I raced him and still kicked his ass and same with my friend with SC. I love tricking Rice burners because they think they are fast. I beat a Del Sol that looked like it was running 12 sec in the 1/4mile. My friend told me that his friend said it had headers, full exaust, turbo, and he also said it wasn't street legal and I made it look like it was a corolla. Yes, he was racing because after he rolled down his window and asked if I had a viper engine it or something. The only Honda I will not mess with is an S2000 or something that is running 10's or close to that. Once I get my blower I will think about messing with them, but for right now I will stick with racing the slow Imports or 6 cylinder mustangs and cameros who think they are hella tight. If you think my information is wrong about those stupid burners then feel free to e-mail me. If it is a good e-mail that seems reasonable then I will post it on my sight. Same with those who agree with my idea about the burners.

Top 10 Things why burners are stupid

  • 1.They all make the same noise(whaaaaaaaa!!!!)
  • 2.Why not save money and put a coffie can on instead(same size).
  • 3.For some reason they are all "TYPE R"
  • 4.With such a big spoiler, how does it go fast?
  • 5.PLAYED OUT
  • 6.Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 7.Why so many lights?Doesn't add horse power!
  • 8.How do 4 regular sized adults fit in a burner?
  • 9.To scary to race(YA RIGHT)
  • 10.FART PIPE whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

If you have a statment on why burners are stupid, E-MAIL me and I might post it.

OTHER CARS THAT MIGHT MATCH THE SHO

My friend and I test drove a bunch of different cars, mostly amereican cars(don't by a new Celica GTS because they are expensive(AS much as a 2000 camero SS) .They were selling at $32,000. The Grand Prix GTP was pretty quick and hella nice inside, but not fast enough. We also test drove a Contour SVT and that was cool. It was pretty quick but did not feel faster than the Gen. 1 SHO. Overall the SVT was a good experiance. The 2000 Mustang GT we drove was faster but it also has a V8 which is cheating. It loses though because it does not win in the sleeper contest.

I AGREE THAT ALMOST ALL RICE BURNERS SUCK ASS HARDCORE, BUT THE ('90-'96 NISSAN 300ZX 2+2) STILL HAULS ASS PRETTY WELL. I OWN A '91 SHO AND LOVE IT, BUT THE 300ZX REMAINS THE ONLY RICE BURNER V6 THAT WILL OUTRUN ALMOST ANY SHO ON THE ROAD. (MAYBE A '92+ TOYOTA SUPRA) OH. BY THE WAY, YOUR EXHAUST TIP IDEA CAME FROM THE '92-'95 YEARS, NOT THE '91-'95 e-MAIL ME BACK IF YOU'VE SEEN A SHO (EVEN SUPERCHARGED) THAT WILL WHIP A 300ZX. TRY THIS WEBSITE FOR 300ZX REFENCES IF YOU WANT TO COMPARE TIMES OR LOOKS. WWW.Z32.COM
RE:I agree with you 100% but I add on a NSX to because they are 6 cylinders and yes a newer supra twin turbo can beat any stock SHO. Once I am done with my car it will be able to beat a 300zx though. The 91-95 exshaust was a typo that I forgot to fix. Sorry for any misunderstandings.

I bought my wife a '95 SHO (used, in '96, too expensive for my walletnew). We use it as our family car (2 preschoolers with a third child on theway in the fall). Excellent "sleeper" car. Even with the ground effects package most people think it is a regular Taurus. We just replaced the clutch last week (61,000 miles, which the dealer said was a good life span on the thing). Our is fully loaded (leather interior, moonroof, 5 speed, all the goodies) and when pushed it packs one heck of a punch. It also makes for one nice family car.

Dear fellow SHO owner, > As I was visiting your site I noticed one e-mail stating that the 300zx would waste a stock SHO. And you seemed to agree. I have news for you. True, I do believe that a TURBO 300zx could give any stock SHO a run for it's money, but I don't believe that an unhuffed 300 could do any damage to a well driven MTX SHO. I say this for two reasons: 1) Coming home from work one night, a poor '90's something non-turbo 300 wanted to race on the highway. I just couldn't refuse, and by the time I was doing about 110 I let off and realized that the poor 300 was so far behind that the front of his car wasn't even recognizable in my rearview mirror (about 15 car lengths). By the way I drive a bone stock '91 SHO with a MTX and 130,000 miles on it. The second reason is this: 2) As I pulled out an old issue of Road & Track (1994?), I noticed that the non-turbo 300zx ran the quarter mile in the mid to high 15's, I believe it was 15.7 (0-60 in 7.0 secs.), and the turbo Z ran the quarter in 14.9 secs.(0-60 in 6.5 secs.). In that same issue I noticed that a '93 MTX SHO (heavier than the 1st gen. SHO) went from 0-60 in 6.6 secs and ran the quarter in 15.2 secs. Both numbers are considerably faster than the non-turbo 300zx and not too far off pace with the turbo. You have to remember that even with the 300 horsepower the turbo Z (and the 220 in the non-turbo) is pushing out, it still has a lot of weight to haul around. Believe it or not, the turbo Z weighs something like 3700lbs. (about 300 lbs. more than a SHO). I want people to understand however that there are 300's quicker than these numbers and SHO's that are slower, but I believe that overall a manual SHO could take a stock non-turbo Z any day of the week. Besides, if anyone wants to race in a turbo Z, I'll just bring out my big gun, a modified '93 mustang LX 5.0 (quarter mile in 13.4 at 106 mph on street tires!) Well, I hope that my information will help in the future. The info. that I gave is accurate to the best of my knowledge.Sorry about the misrepresented information. I forgot to mention that the non-turbo Z that was tested had an automatic transmission.
RE:I totally agree with you on that infomation but yes I was talking about the twin turbo 300zx. I don't don't even waste my time with the nonturboed 300zx. They are to damn slow for me.

Well, I am a Import fan myself, and I think that a Honda can take a SHO. But I still like SHO's, that's the only domestic I like. But I hope you know that the SHO is really an import engine with just a domestic body (the motor was being built by Yamaha). My friend has a 89 SHO with 70 shot NOS, it can beet most of the import where I live. But if the SHO's can smoke any Honda than how come they aren't running 9's at the track ???? The fastest Front Wheel Drive car in the world is a Honda ( 9.05 ). There are naturally aspirated Hondas running 10's. I have never seen a SHO even hit 11's. The SHO also don't have VTEC ( Valve Timing Electronic Controlled ) like Hondas. But I would like to see someone go all out drag with the SHO, I think they could hit 9's if they were twin turbo. I do like your site except for the "Why Burners Are Stupid".
RE:Well I have only seen one burner that can beat a stock 5.0 mustang in a race and I give a lot a respect to that person but most rice burners I see on the street look fast but evena regular taurus gl can beat them in a race.

I am a very PROUD owner of a 89 Taurus SHO. I have a K&N filter and minor mods. I bought it 3years ago. It has 106,000 miles. It runs great, minor problems. I ran a quarter mile in 14.2 sec. I love it, the best sleeper car I ever owned. I had a 87 Mustang LX 5.0. Nice but not nice enough to even come close to my SHO. I am in a process of fixing it up I hope to beat most cars in my area. Most are Mustangs and Camaros. I found most parts at www.spmotorsports.com . I just wanted to know what kind of exhuast do you have? Also other parts that you have. I am trying to get mine to atleast low 11's in a quarter mile. Any help you can provide would be very greatful. I just want to prove to the morons in my area that jap jobs and v-8s are not the answer( most are kids that mommy and daddy bought them).

Hey man i love your thing about the JAP CRAP. I have a 92 with basic mods; springs, k&n, etc. I know that i havent found a single import around my area that can keep up, except for one its a 97 gsx eclipse. But he is a moron and is running a bigger turbo and runs slicks on the street. But anyways i have a mustang that will run 11 sec 1/4's. The SHO may not beat it but its hell gettin groceries with a roll cage and 5 points in the way. Great website man.

How's it going? I would just like to say up front that I love the Taurus SHO. I have never owned one, but I plan to someday. I have a friend with an '89 SHO. It is a blast to drive. It is very hard not to take it to redline in every gear, every time I drive it. The motor's sound is typical of most DOHC 24V V-6s, which is to say awesome. What I am really writing about is to say that not all Japanese 4-cylinders are terrible. I acknowledge that in your writing, you are going mostly after the poser, "riceboy" Hondas. I live in the Wichita, Ks area and believe me, these racer wannabes are everywhere. They are all the same: straight-through exhaust with at least a 5 inch tip, all clear lights with colored bulbs, huge, wild body kits, loud stereos, huge rims, slammed suspension, performance part stickers all over, and anything else you can think of that will attract attention and make them feel "fast". They go around flying through traffic and revving at everyone. They think that their beige Civic or Accord base model (DX) automatic is instantly the fastest thing to hit the streets because they have added rims, a huge body kit, a loud exhaust, and a "racing" intake. I totally agree that these peo! ple and those cars have destroyed the image of import performance, but there are still some Japanese cars that are fairly quick from the factory and have much aftermarket potential. The cars that I am most concerned with are the Mitsubishi Diamond Star Coupes, or the Eagle Talon/Mitsu. Eclipse/Plymouth Laser trio. The fastest and best of this group are the turbo, all-wheel-drive versions, Talon TSi AWD, Eclipse GSX, and the Laser Turbo AWD. Since they are all the same mechanically, I will refer to them as one. As tested by Car & Driver, the first gen. cars (1990-94) run a 6.3 0-60mph and a 14.7 in the quarter mile. The second gen. (1995-99) are slightly slower do to extra weight and smaller turbo. I own a mint condition, 50,000 mile '90 Eclipse GSX. It had one woman owner who babied it before me. I have done a few upgrades in the 1.5 years that I have owned it. Being a full-time college student, my time and funds are limited. I have done the following: K&N filter with removed airbox, gutted MAF sensor, all Redline fluids, Thermal 3 inch stainless exhaust (very expensive), short throw shifter, wheels and tires, much suspension work, and few minor cosmetic mods. It is quite quick for being nearly stock and will take most any Honda in Wichita, at least the ones that have the guts not to take the nearest turn when I challenge them. My point is that these cars have a huge following and many are street legal and run 10's without any nitrous. For proof you can look at buschurracing.com, extrememotorsports.com, hahnracecraft.com, and there are many others. They usually dominate the "Battle of the Imports" every year, and are very competitive in autocross. These car really are quick with huge potential. I totally agree with your view of "riceboy-ed" Hondas. Please just don't lump every Japanese import owner in with them. By the way, for a hillarious look at some great examples of these racer-wannabes check out Brian's Riceboy page. I don't know the exact address, but it is so funny and true to life. Thanks a for listening.
