Starrling Cerridwen

((Online Roleplaying))
Starrling's Flight

Her name is Starrling Cerridwen. Actually, her given name is Anu but she was forced to take a new name upon leaving her village. You see, her people originally come from Scotland but settled many years ago in Glastonbury. It is the year 1643 c.e. and there be witch hunters near. She was forced to flee, change her name and stay in hiding to prevent discovery. You see, they are considered witches. But truly, they simply follow a nature religion. They believe the Gods and Goddesses protect and provide for them and they, in turn, honor them and mother earth. 'Tis true that they cast spells, but only to the good of themselves and their loved ones. 'Tis not in their nature to harm anyone.

Starrling is shy but feisty, and a notorious flirt. She is tall and slender, with very long and wavy auburn hair which she often pulls back and ties with various homemade hair pretties of bone, wood, shells, flowers and vines. Her eyes are a twinkling light brown, sometimes cat-like in appearance and color. Starrling is in her 20's but is vague about exact age, which she claims only to be a "state of mind". She is usually found wearing typical peasant clothing of shift, bodice and skirts and carries a few pouches attached to her belt. She is often seen carrying a book of homemade paper, bound with leather thongs and tree bark and often pulls out a piece of charcoal and sketches various subjects. She shows talent but is shy and uneasy with praise. She also has other *talents* that she must keep secret.

Starrling had previously been handfasted to Gawen from her village but left him behind when she was forced to flee. However, she is currently carrying his child and is unaware of the turmoil and scandal that will surround her when villagers discover her condition.

The Burning Times
(written 1980 by Charlie Murphy)

In the cool of the evening they used to gather
neath the stars in the meadows - circle near an old oak tree
at the times appointed by the seasons of the Earth and the phases of the moon.
In the center often stood a woman
equal with the others and respected for her word,
one of the many we call the Witches -
the healers and the teachers of the wisdom of the Earth.
The people grew through the knowledge she gave them -
herbs to heal their bodies, spells to make their spirits whole.
Hear them chanting healing incantations
calling for the wise ones, celebrate in dance and song
(chant)
Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna

There were those who came to power, domination
and they bonded in the worship of a dead man on a cross.
They sought control of the common people
by demanding allegiance to the church of Rome.
And the Pope declared the Inquisition.
It was a war against the women
whose power they feared.
In this holocaust against the nature people,
Nine million European women died.
And the tale is told of those who by the hundreds
holding together chose their death in the sea
while chanting the praises of the Mother Goddess.
A refusal of betrayal - women were dying to be free.
(chant)
Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna

Now the Earth is a Witch and the men still burn her,
stripping her down with the mining
and the poisons of their wars.
Still to us the Earth is a healer, a teacher, a mother.
She's the weaver of the web of life that keeps us all alive.
She gives us the vision to see through the chaos.
She gives us the courage - it is our will to survive!
(chant)
Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna
