Employee Loyalty, What's That?

These past few months have been a turbulent time for Jesse.  Last December, he quit his post at the Keck School of Medicine at USC as well as his part-time sales position at Banana Republic to become Editorial Assistant at Tipssmusic.com -- only to find himself a disgruntled employee after just two months.  In a bold and shocking move, he walked out on the job and spent the next three weeks pestering his friends with e-mails as he debated moving to South America and becoming a coffee bean picker.  Luckily for him, the post office refused to process his passport without an appointment, and he was forced to look for work.  He is now proud to report to his friends that since March 13, he has been working steadily for AOL's Digital City.  He loves his new job and can be reached via his work e-mail at DCLAJesse@aol.com or via telephone at (310) 979-5241.

Fun Fact:   According to the Journal of Career Planning & Employment, on the average, a student leaving college today can be expected to have 3-5 careers and 10-12 jobs during a work life that will last 40-50 years.

Fun Fact #2:  As of April 9, 2001, Banana Republic no longer provides refunds for worn or damaged clothing. The company also no longer issues store credit for such merchandise. Just FYI.

From Goliard to Glaser

Goliard fans all over the world were dismayed a couple of months ago when the Goliard Trio announced that it would be disbanding.  Pianist Richard Glaser and drummer Mark San Filippo decided to continue collaborating together and formed a new group called the Richard Glaser Trio.  Miguael Sawaya joins the trio on bass, and former Goliard Trio Bassist Dave Culwell currently heads his own quintet.  San Filippo sits in with the Culwell Quintet Sunday nights at the Hotel Cafe on Cahuenga.  The Richard Glaser Trio plans to release an album sometime this year and performs regulary at the Money Tree in Toluca Lake and Crustacean in Los Angeles.  Check here for detailed listings.

JAZZ'S NEWEST ADDITION

Fun Fact: On January 5, 1979, the famously cosmic Charles Mingus died in Cuernavaca, Mexico, at the age of 56. That same day, 56 whales beach themselves on the Mexican coast.

Ice Cube Ain't the Only One With Higher Education

It seems like everyone these days is on their way to post-grad work. Randy Cambou -- Jesse's former roommate who once sprained his back when he volunteered to move their pretty neighbor's 100-lb fridge by himself -- has been accepted into the Political Science Ph.D. program at UCSD. The lovely Jenn Wolf has gained admittance into the special Dispute Resolution/MBA program at Pepperdine. Kara Jones recently took the GMAT and received a score of 710 out of 800. She reportedly is planning to attend CSUN. Richard Mendoza currently is studying for the GMAT using Jesse's books. They will join other Graduate school attendees Todd, Kathy Lee and Debbie Wu.

Fun Fact: Jesse attended a career workshop at UCLA in 1997 where a panelist proudly told the audience, "The only thing a Master's is good for is...masturbation."

ANOTHER PROUD GRAD

Back to the Motherland

Our very own Kathy Lee will be travelling to China this summer for a 12-week internship. Presently, Kathy is attending Yale University, finishing up her public health graduate coursework. It is rumored that she will be performing a special Chinese dance to promote fellowship between our two countries.

Fun Fact: According to Mark San Filippo, who believes everything his momma tells him, the name of the Chinese pilot who bashed himself into the American jet was..."Wong Wei."

Give the Man His Share

Just in case you're a straggler like me, the deadline to pay your taxes this year is Monday, April 16 at midnight. So don't wait until Tuesday morning or else you'll be assed out!

Fun Fact: Federal tax revenues for the 2000 fiscal year is expected to reach $2.025 trillion.

TO PAY YOUR GODDAMNED TAXES!

To the Delight of Millions, SOL Re-launches

A Letter from the Editor

Finally. It's been more than four months since SOL was shut down for revamping, but it was all worth the wait. I want to send a shot out to Kathy Lee and all of the other folks here in Cali who kept pestering me to put up the site. Without you guys, I probably just would have dumped the whole project and spent more time outside in the sun getting fresh air. But whatever. A few new writers have been added to the mix here at SOL, Martin Gabaya, Beth Bloom, Jenn Wolf and Katie Krum and you can catch their stuff in the "Features" section. Some couldn't make this month's issue so keep an eye out for next month's edition.

Guest columnists will also be making their way into the monthly editions so keep an eye out for the "Special Features" section. If you're interested in contributing some material or becoming a staffer let me know. If you're looking for pictures of yourselves, check out the "About Us" section up at the top. I've arranged everyone by socioeconomic status. As you guys probably know, this is always a work-in-progress so if you have any suggestions or comments drop me a line. Hopefully, the pics are faster to download now, and you'll find a lot more content to keep you distracted at work. Love, peace and hair grease.

Noted Event Planner Celebrates 25th Birthday

Jennifer Wang is turning the big 2-5 this Wednesday, which is cool for SOL's Managing Editor because it means that he's dating an older woman. To commemorate this landmark event, Jen held a small get-together at Nic's Bar and Restaurant on Canon Drive last Saturday. The martinis there were excellent if pricey, and the food was killer. Especially the free hors d' oeuvres. Highlights at Nic's included the lounge act singing "Happy Birthday" to Jen and Mark San Filippo throwing his water all over Cammy.

Dinner was followed by dancing at the Gate, a chi-chi club on La Cienega. The place was pretty ritz but somehow Damian managed to make it in. The music was good and there were more Persian people than you could shake a stick at. Although you probably shouldn't be shaking a stick at anyone. Bob had fun with the two girls that Rich brought with him. Did I just write that last line? Huh, I guess I did. And Jen's assistant gave her boyfriend a lap dance that I think we all enjoyed. All in all, a very entertaining night.

Happy Birthday, babe!

Survivor Game a Hit on E-Mail

Once again, creative genius Long Hung -- founder of Choner Productions -- has come up with something to keep up the tension and animosity between his friends. This time's it's the e-mail version of the CBS' hit reality adventure show Survivor. Currently, there are still two separate teams trying to outdo each other at trivia. Ping and the Dancing Fairies (You can't make up shit like that) have been dominating the MoDuMaKuMyAa team, winning the past three weeks's challenges. The game has been tremendously cutthroat with much behind-the-scenes action going on. Threats have been made, poems have been written and bribes from Chinese bartenders with heavy accents have been offered. On the down low, it is generally assumed that a certain non-email checking female dancing fairy (and you know who you are, bitch) is heading for the big Survivor game in the sky, and that Jesse wishes that everyone could win because he loves all of you guys. Man, what a great teammate that Jesse is.

A friendly midget is just one of the many prizes awaiting the winner of Survivor.
