Every year beginning the Monday
before Labor Day, a city blossoms forth from the alkaline dust of a parched
dry lake bed in the Northern Nevada Black Rock Desert. A city both
the wildest and the tamest you will find anywhere. A city where you're
money is (almost) no good. ( You pay to enter and you pay for ice and
coffee.) Everything else is by barter only. You won't see a
merchant pavillion in sight, but you will see a lot of good (and decidedly
decadent) people offering a wide range of goods and services for free or
for barter just because you need them - or you LOOK like you need them.
Performance art, massage, concerts and rages for all tastes, fire performances,
art cars, candy, trinkets, beer, a nip from a Jack Daniel's bottle on a cold
night, a glow stick, a power bar, a plastic foot on a leather cord, the sight
of the beautiful, naked and ornately adorned bodies.
Black Rock City is both the city
of the future and a throwback to a simpler era. It's a one week a year
experiment in Utopia. No matter how the weather Gods choose to treat
us, Black Rock City is a kind of Utopia. One of the few rules
is NO SPECTATORS! I follow that rule by offering tarot readings.
And I try to meet as many people and make as many friends as possible.
It is the one vacation that a person can take alone and not feel alone, and
two of the three years I've attended Burning Man I've gone alone, and come
back with a thousand new friends in my heart and memories. I've included
a gallery of pictures from each year that I've attended the festival.
