Here's a dope new interview with Hieroglyphic MC Del the Funky Homosapien. Check out what he has to say!
Q. Whats up! So how long you been making music for?
A. For like 10 years 11 years maybe, since 91 professionaly. Been rhyming since like 4th grade.
Q. Who were some of your Hip Hop influences back in the day?
A. Man all the greats. My favorites was Lakim Shadazz use to be tight, Chill Rob G, DJ 45 King, and Rakim. Whoever who was kinda stylelistic with theres, kinda funny that’s who I like listening to. Like nowadays, Redman, Erick Sermon, and the whole click. Them are some of my favorites cause there hella funny to me and they just flip raps like that. And Tribe, Q-Tip is one of my favorites right now. But not anything that goes over my head where I need to read a fuckin text book or something. I like it straight forward.
Q. What are some of your past releases?
A. Past releases are Hieroglyipics "3rd Eye Vision", "Future Development" that was sold on the net and at shows, and 2 solo albums on Electra.
Q. So now your new album is about to drop?
A. The title is "Both Sides of the Brain" on April 11th. Its pretty phat though.
Q. Who are some of the producers and MC's that you worked with for this album?
A. Naturally Hiero, A-Plus , Casual and Dominio did some beats. Outside of Hiero, El-P of Company Flow and Prince Paul.
Q. Did you do any production and what type of equipment do your use?
A. I did like half of the album. For that album I used the SP 1200 but for now on I'm using the MPC2000. I swtich back and forth though.
Q. So how long did it take to make "Both Sides of the "Brain" from beginning to end?
A. Well the album is the best stuff that I had over the time I haven't had anything out. But I kept it for like 2 year range so if it was to old I didn't use it.
Q. Now are there any other projects that your about to work on?
A. Yeah, I'm working with Casual on an album called Smash Brothers. And me and Automater are working on an album called 30/30 that’s like some science fiction type shit.
Q. Any tour plans coming up?
A. I don’t know, maybe after the album comes out. Some overseas stuff. Gotta do it the old fashion way and do the touring. I think the whole element of performance is gone cuase that aint even your main focus as an artist these days, your main focus as an artist on a label is a tight single and all this other bullshit. But back then it was all shows and that element needs to be put on albums somehow.
Q. So what are you checkin for in video game systems right now?
A. Dreamcast is what I'm checking right now, you got to have this. But I still play my Nintendo 64, there coming out with a lot of tight new games. But I'm trying to study music right now.
Q. How do you like being independent now then being signed to a major label?
A. I would have to say its positive. But I would have to make it postive no matter what happens, you can do whatever you want to do. Thru out the whole process its been a good thing though.
Q. Any plans for another Hiero album?
A. Yeah fo sho! We just got to do our own thing first. But I'm already thinking about that.
Q. What else is coming out from Hiero?
A. The Prose bout to come out, Souls of Mischief bout to come out with an album, and Casual workin on an album and I'm tyring to do more!
Q. So whats your opinion on the current state of HipHop?
A. I think its Hella tight actually, hella more styles its hella better. Of course there people out there that’s gonna ride a gimmick you gonna always have that no matter what type of music. But for the people coming original is what I be checking for. All that’s been steped up every year. It aint the same when it was started its way more tighter.
Q. Who are you feeling in Hip Hop?
A. Ghost is what I'm bumpin now. I got Ghost and Screwball is what I'm feelin. I'm more on the ruff edge stuff. I still like some abstract stuff but not to much abstract. Like Q-Tip album was hella tight that’s one of my favorite. I had Jay-Z that I was playing for a minute, hella impressive. I'm feelin the Godfather Don album. And the MF Doom album is tight!
Q. Aight, any final comments or shout outs?
A. To all my fans thanks for the support. Working hella hard on music, I aint changin up. I just hope everybody is wirth me! Look for the other projects that I'm doing with Casual and Automater. And check out this album I'm working on for just the net called "Achilles Heel" that are all new songs! Peace!
