1 CONT Clyde Conley said at age 4 or 5 he mentioned there were rai
1 CONC sins in the gravy (flys) he was sent outside.

1 CONT Clyde Albert Conley went to Selah Washington in 1934 wher
1 CONC e he worked in the West Dependable Grocery store and afte
1 CONC r that in the Hardware store. During WW II, he managed a gr
1 CONC ocery store for Robert Lince (Jim's Market) while Robert Li
1 CONC nce was in the war. Clyde later owned a grocery of his own
1 CONC , Clyde's Market, in Selah Washington, which Robert Lince p
1 CONC urchased from him several years later.

1 CONT Clyde was Selah City Clerk for a number of years and serve
1 CONC d on the Selah City Council from 1953 to 1972. Clyde also s
1 CONC erved on the Selah Chamber of Commerce and was president o
1 CONC f that organization in the late 1930's. Clyde started the C
1 CONC hamber's Crab Feed in 1936 and it is still (1996) an annua
1 CONC l event. Clyde served on the Fire District Board as secreta
1 CONC ry for several years and served on the Yakima Valley Fire D
1 CONC istrict Board.

1 CONT Clyde was Treasurer of his church, Selah Church of Christ
1 CONC . Clyde was also active in the Selah Lions Club and held al
1 CONC most every office in the organization, including presiden
1 CONC t thru out the years.

1 CONC y, lived with Lora and Erwin Knowles on their ranch near Be

1 CONC d in years earlier, and at the same time rode a horse to Wh
1 CONC itstrand, Washington and worked on the Deshayne Ranch for 5

1 CONT      It is very frequently the people behind the scenes, th
1 CONC ose that just keep things moving , are the silent majorit
1 CONC y that really gets things done, quietly and with persistenc
1 CONC e. Clyde Conley is one of those people. Clyde Conley retire
1 CONC d from the position of Secretary of Fire District #2, Dec
1 CONC . 31, 1990, but his actual retirement date was February o
1 CONC f 1989. On the date of his retirement in February of 1989
1 CONC , he was asked to stay on for the sake of continuity, so h
1 CONC e did. Upon his retirement, he had spent 34 years as the se
1 CONC cretary of Fire District #2. While doing this public Job, C
1 CONC onley was also serving as secretary of the Chamber of Comme
1 CONC rce. During his tenure, Conley had to prepare minutes of ea
1 CONC ch meeting and see to it that copies of the minutes went t
1 CONC o each of the three fire commissioners, a job that entaile
1 CONC d a large amount of detail and bookkeeping. Conley also ha
1 CONC d to keep fire commissioners informed of previous matters t
1 CONC hat would have an influence on the decisions that they wer
1 CONC e making. He was responsible for having the paperwork and a
1 CONC ccounting ready for auditors and he also had to be aware o
1 CONC f annexations and annexation policies and how they would af
1 CONC fect the workings of the fire district  Fire Chief, John So
1 CONC den, recalls that Conley never missed a meeting. "He was al
1 CONC ways attentive, and kept good minutes," Soden said. "He sho
1 CONC wed a definite concern and interest for the people of Fir
1 CONC e District #2." Throughout Conley's time as the secretary
1 CONC , fire district grew . It was incorporated with the City o
1 CONC f Selah on Sept 26, 1966, and later incorporations include
1 CONC d East Selah, Lower Wenas and Upper Wenas. Each time a ne
1 CONC w area of responsibility was added , Conley's responsibilit
1 CONC ies grew. Conley had to be aware of the various types of ro
1 CONC ads and whether access of specific types of fire fighting v
1 CONC ehicles would be possible. All problems had to be anticipat
1 CONC ed. When Conley started as the secretary, the three fire co
1 CONC mmissioners were Axel Samuelson, Ed Brown and William Dowdy
1 CONC . Clyde Conley is now (1991) 85 years old, and can, at last
1 CONC , turn the wheel over to someone else. Carl North, firefigh
1 CONC ter and high-school teacher, is the new secretary of Fire D
1 CONC istrict #2. Conley lives in retirement in Selah. (Sourc

1 CONT      Clyde Conley shot a nice two-point buck far up in th
1 CONC e Wenas on Sunday and he almost got a bear in what he term
1 CONC s the hard way, The bear, probably frightened by hunters, c
1 CONC ame tearing down the ridge on which Clyde was walking. Ther
1 CONC e was not much room to pass so Clyde let out a husky yell a
1 CONC nd the bear swerved to the side. About that time Larry Tyrr
1 CONC ell got in a good shot and bruin rolled to the bottom of th
1 CONC e small canyon and two more shots failed to stop him. Clyd
1 CONC e sheepishly reported that Bobby Dubuque, who was in the pa

1 CONT    Clyde Albert Conley, 91, Selah, Wa., died Monday June 23
1 CONC , 1997 at Selah Convalescent Center. He was born June 7, 19
1 CONC 06 in Lincoln, Nebraska to James Albert Conley and Clara Ma
1 CONC y (Burkhart) Conley. When Clyde was 6 years old, the famil
1 CONC y moved to Waitsburg, Wa. and then when 12 years old move
1 CONC d to Prosser, Wa. At age 18 he moved to Puyallup, Wa. wher
1 CONC e his mother died. Clyde graduated from high school in Puya
1 CONC llup, Wa. in 1925.
1 CONT    Clyde sought out and found Alta Fravel that he had met i
1 CONC n Prosser, Wa. when he was 12 years old. Clyde Conley and A
1 CONC lta Fravel were married in Seattle, Wa. February 16, 192
1 CONC 9  and lived in Seattle, Wa. a short time before moving t
1 CONC o the Prosser and Benton City area. While in Prosser, Wa.
1 CONC , their first child was born on June 26, 1931, Shirley Anne
1 CONC . Clyde and Alta moved to Yakima, Wa., in 1934, where thei
1 CONC r second child was born on April 29, 1934, Donald Richar
1 CONC d . Clyde and Alta and family moved to Selah, Wa. shortly a
1 CONC fter the birth of their son in 1934 and have lived there ev
1 CONC er since.
1 CONT     In Selah Clyde managed the West Dependable Grocery Stor
1 CONC e and then worked in the hardware store. During WWII Clyd
1 CONC e managed Jim's Market for Robert Lince and later owned Cly
1 CONC de's Market. He was also a bookkeeper and dispatcher for Mc
1 CONC Pherson Trucking.
1 CONT    Clyde was actively involved in his community. He was Cit
1 CONC y Clerk for a number of years, served on the City Council f
1 CONC or 19 years. He was on the Selah Chamber of Commerce, inclu
1 CONC ding the office of president in the late 1930's. He starte
1 CONC d the Chamber's Crab Feed in 1936 which is still an annua
1 CONC l event. For his 34 years of service as secretary on the Fi
1 CONC re District Board , a meeting room at the new fire statio
1 CONC n was named in his honor. He was an active member of the Se
1 CONC lah Lions Club, holding every office including president. C
1 CONC lyde was a beloved member of the Christian Church at Sela
1 CONC h serving there as an elder and treasurer.
1 CONT    Clyde is survived by his wife of 68 years Alta Conley o
1 CONC f Selah; Daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Eli Reyna o
1 CONC f East Selah, Wa., son and daughter-in-law, Don and Scharma
1 CONC l Conley of Kennewick, Wa., 2 nieces Abbie Shaw and Mary Lo
1 CONC u Foresman, 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and ma
1 CONC ny grandnieces and grandnephews, and he was affectionatel
1 CONC y called "Grandpa Clyde" by many, many other children who a
1 CONC dopted him as their own.

1 CONC n February 16, 1929 in Seattle, and moved back to the Yakim
1 CONC a area in 1933. Alta was a very loving mother and friend. S
1 CONC he was "Grandma Alta" to every child she met. Alta raised h
1 CONC er family in Selah and was a long time, active member of th
1 CONC e Christian Church of Selah.
1 CONT    Alta's survivors include her daughter Shirley Reyna, an
1 CONC d husband Eli, of Yakima; son Don and his wife Scharmal, o
1 CONC f Kennewick; nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildr
1 CONC en, and several nieces and nephews.
1 CONT    Alta was preceded in death by her husband Clyde, and he
1 CONC r parents, five brothers and one sister.

1 CONT Isaac Clark Bates was born 1770, died in Indiana, migrate
1 CONC d in 1805 to Guernsey County, Ohio , later to Noble County
1 CONC , Seneca Township; married 1st, Katherine Moore, whose sist
1 CONC er, Ruth ma rried Isaac's brother Timothy; married 2nd, Cat
1 CONC herine Powell. Isaac and his brother, Timothy , jointly ent
1 CONC ered 160 acres of land on Wills Creek in 1805. They had mar
1 CONC ried sisters and agre ed that when one of them was able t
1 CONC o buy out the other, the other would sell. Isaac lost h
1 CONC i s wife early and her death placed him in a bind, so he so
1 CONC ld to Timothy. He purchased land nea r Sarahsville and erec
1 CONC ted a mill on his farm that could be operated by horse-powe
1 CONC r when ther e was a scarcity of water. He also had a distil
1 CONC lery and taught the oxen to drink the whiskey , using a cof
1 CONC fee pot to pour it down their throats. When the roads wer
1 CONC e muddy and the loads h ard to pull, Isaac would bring ou
1 CONC t the coffee pot and the oxen would eagerly elevate their h
1 CONC e ads to receive a dram, then pull with courage and strengt
1 CONC h renewed. He was a man of great end urance, especially i
1 CONC n time of great pain. It became necessary to remove a leg
1 CONC . He sent for th e doctor, but did not tell him of the prob
1 CONC lem. So the doctor had to use the tools at hand , a butche
1 CONC r knife without anesthetic. Isaac later moved to Indiana, w
1 CONC here it became necessar y to remove the other leg. Later, h
1 CONC e moved again, so parts of his body were buried in thre

1 CONC n 1917 he was married to Eliza Wright. He came to Nebrask
1 CONC a in 1856 and to Iowa in 1880. After his second marriage h
1 CONC e lived in Oklahoma for a few years and then returned to th
1 CONC e old home north of Thurman. He is survived by hi s wife; t
1 CONC hree daughters, Nellie Herker of Thurman, Nettie Hindman an

1 CONC omestead in that part of the state. In 1916 he moved to Fla

1 CONC 6, and from there she moved to Rock Bluff, Neb. , with he
1 CONC r parents.      She was later united in marriage to Reube
1 CONC n Todd, who was killed in M issouri. To this union was bor
1 CONC n one son, Wesley, who is left to mourn her loss. She was l
1 CONC ate r married to J.H. Bachler and to this union ten childre
1 CONC n were born, two dying in infancy. Th e remaining childre
1 CONC n who are left to mourn are Wesley Todd, Andy Bachler, Ale

1 CONT    Shortly after one o'clock Thursday afternoon fire was di
1 CONC scovered in Alex Bachler's barn on his farm 4 miles north o
1 CONC f Thurman in the Dutch Hollow neighborhood. it appeared tha
1 CONC t the f re originated in the basement at the south side o
1 CONC f the barn and owing to the strong south wind the fire wa
1 CONC s beyond control before discovered.
1 CONT    Mrs. Bachler and her daughter in-law, were in the hous
1 CONC e and the men had gone to the field to work. The women folk
1 CONC s heard a roaring sound but thought it a car going by or dr
1 CONC iving in , but not seeing any one, they investigated and di
1 CONC scovered the fire.
1 CONT    They tried to call the men, but Mr Bachler had seen th
1 CONC e fire about that time and hurried in and tried to save wha
1 CONC t he could. Mrs. Turnbull saw the blaze and smoke also fro
1 CONC m the Britta in farm house north and she and Charles Tarpen
1 CONC ning, Earl Brittian and Jay Briley hurried to the scene an
1 CONC d did what they could, but the  fire soon spread from the l
1 CONC arge barn to the corn cribs and implements sheds on the nor
1 CONC th and east  and only a few pieces of machinery were saved.
1 CONT    Mr. Bachler was badly burned on hands, arms and face, tr
1 CONC ying to save some machinery. Mrs . Bachler whose health wa
1 CONC s poor anyway, was so overcome with  the shock and worry ov
1 CONC er her husband that she collapsed and Dr. Miller was calle
1 CONC d before she could be relieved.
1 CONT    In the meantime Mr. Bachler, not knowing the condition o
1 CONC f his wife had been hurried to Dr. Miller's office in Tabo
1 CONC r and he being gone went to Dr. Roark, who dressed his burn
1 CONC s, and he returned home.
1 CONT    Both Mr. and Mrs. Bachler are still in a serious conditi
1 CONC on, but hopes are entertained for their recovery.
1 CONT    The amount of damage cased by the fire is not known, bu
1 CONC t is a very large amount. One good horse was burned in th
1 CONC e barn, also two calves and it is believed some hogs and ch
1 CONC ickens. Also about 1,000 bushels of ear corn, some hay an
1 CONC d much farm machinery of all kinds. There were 27 small pig
1 CONC s in a shed and they were all destroyed.
1 CONT    The machinery is twisted and bent and  the temper draw
1 CONC n by the terrific heat, so that they will be of little valu
1 CONC e even though the wood parts might be replaced. The barn wa
1 CONC s a very large structure with basement below  the regular f
1 CONC loor and also had a large hay mow, and could house many hea
1 CONC d of stock in addition to the hay and grain. The loss is on

1 CONC s used on the farm in his day.  In 1899 he was married to L
1 CONC aura Dyke. To this union four children were born ; W.A.Bach
1 CONC eler, now of Glenwood, Iowa; R.A. of El Reno, Okla., Phili
1 CONC p of Tabor and Vera, now Mrs Delbert Van Arsdel of Counci
1 CONC l Bluffs, Iowa.   Mr Bacheler led an arduous life, having m
1 CONC ore than the usual lot of misfortunes and difficulties. I
1 CONC n 1946 his wife passed away and he has lived alone since th
1 CONC en until this past October.      Besides the four childre
