My Trivial Pursuits
So What Else Is New?

I don't claim to be a pundit or anything, just an ordinary citizen who likes to take a look at current events, when time allows. If you have other views, feel free to enlighten me :). Below are some links to some news sources I enjoy.

"You have the right to remain silent"...everyone knows their Miranda Rights. Local police and prosecutors are arguing before the Supreme Court that criminal who voluntarily confess should not be automatically freed because some cop forgot to read him his rights. The Justice Department wants to leave things the way they are, arguing that Miranda promotes confidence in the system.

Quite a dilemma...while I hate to seeing murderers walking the street because of a technicality, a person's right against self-incrimination is a vital part of being an American, and I don't really think that it would be right to change it, unless the change still preserved those rights. Of course, this opinion is based on my legal expertise from watching "The Practice", "L.A. Law", and "Hill Street Blues" :).

Director Chris Columbus ("Mrs Doubtfire" & "Bicentennial Man") has been slated to take over the film adaptation of "Harry Potter & The Sorceror's Stone". While I'm glad to see that the project is moving along, I have my doubts about Chris Columbus, whose history doesn't show that he could capture the innocent wonder of childhood as Spielberg might have or the darker side of the Potter books that Tim Burton would have found. For those who haven't read the Potter books, they're one of the most entertaining series around, and fun for all ages! If you'd like to know more about them, please shoot me a note!

I just read this morning that the three remaining Beatles are going to be writing a book about their years together, with about 1,200 photos. Sounds good to me; I just wanted to say that it sounded strange to hear "The Cute One" referred to as "Sir" Paul McCartney :)!

Last week 2,000 commuters in Brazil set fire to a train that had broken down because they were upset over being late for work. Now that's dedication :)!

Apparently, Vice President Gore is getting a lot of flack for his position regarding Elian Gonzalez, the little boy who illegally came over here from Cuba. Gore is now in favor of granting residency to Elian and his father. While I don't agree with Gore's position, in that it's unfair to the millions who are turned away, I understand that it's difficult not to make an exception for this kid.

Well, we made it through another year of the Oscars, and, all-in-all, I think the Academy did well with their selections. By selecting Hillary Swank from "Boys Don't Cry" as Best Actress, and "American Beauty" for Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Kevin Spacey), and Best Picture, the Academy showed it doesn't always have to be so stodgy and conservative. Yay!
