Our great grandmother's brother, Edwin Rice, served with the 13th Mass Infantry - Volunteers during the Civil War. A family member printed his Civil War Letters in 1975, "Civil War Letters of Edwin Rice" Edited by Ted Perry.

Edwin Rice lived in Marlboro (later changed to Marlborough), Massachusetts and was born on December 6, 1839. (To update your roster).

The letters in this booklet are from July 26, 1861 through August 14, 1862. In addition, there are some photographs and added information. One photograph is of the band. Edwin Rice was in the band and the horn he played was presented to the Marlborough Historical Society by his great-niece where it is on display. The book states "The fabric on which the horn rests is a Civil War blanket which belonged to Austin Lawrence, a member of the band".

The letters are very interesting reading with insight into what was going on during this period and their encounters. He writes on August 11, 1862 about a skirmish near him (probably Cedar Mountain, VA) and on August 14 writes (from Camp near Cedar Mountain) that the surgeon general estimated 100 killed and 500 wounded. He also writes "the troops are drawn up in battle resting...also the rebels. It is expected that General Sigel has given the rebels two hours to leave their dead and leave for parts unknown. If they do not leave soon, I think our forces will make them".

After the war veterans established an organization named the Thirteenth Massachusetts Regiment Association and had yearly meetings and a dinner usually at Young's Hotel in Boston. For the year 1912 William was elected their president. Each year a circular was published relating activities from the last meeting. Circulars were published from issue #1 year 1888 to the last issue # 35 in 1922. The following was from issue # 33 in 1920 then #34 the next year.

#33 Comrade William H. H. Rideout, of Co. B, died at Dorchester, Mass. on January 25, 1920, at the age of 79 years. He was one of the original members of the regiment and he served the whole term of three years. For many years he had been employed in the Boston Custom House as an inspector of cigars which position he held at the time of his death.

#34 There is a letter from L. L. Dorr, a physician in San Francisco which has the following: So comrade Rideout has gone West. What a handsome manly looking soldier he was. He could cut us all out when the girls were about, and alas, did so frequently.
