Took part in the passage of the forts on the Mississippi river, and the capture of the rebel fleet. In Dec., '68, was commissioned lieut.-com. Subsequently was the recipient of a medal, and publicly thanked by Corn. W. R. Taylor for jumping overboard in a heavy sea and rescuing a man who had fallen overboard while the vessel was under headway. (Not noted in the book was that Dyer later became an Admiral.) HAR
