Zhong-Min Hu from California writes: In Economics class, we were discussing why people are poor. In many African countries and other third world nations, people are suffering because their material needs are not being met. We concluded that the main cause is overpopulation. The poor want more children because children, if they survive, can take care of the elderly. In the United States, we have social security. The rich do not want children. That accounts for the almost zero percent natural growth rate in the U.S. In less fortunate countries, children are people's social security. These children in turn become poor because there are not enough jobs to support them. They have more kids, and the vicious circle continues. But how can we solve this problem? Should we give people incentives to curb the birth rate? Is that moral? Is is moral not to? Because when a natural disaster hits, people will suffer because they are already doing all that they can do to survive. Also, the infrastructure in these countried, e.g. roads, buildings, etc. cannot handle a really big disaster. In China in 1976, a huge earthquake killed over half a million people. There was not enough quality housing for everybody. So, the question is how important is it to control overpopulation? And what should we be willing to do to control it? (Person posting message speaking) I have taken the liberty to better explain Kacy's philosophy. He believes in his hair, his blue, low-rider truck, and the fact (he says) that he is better than everyone else. Please don't call him self-centered because he would take that as a compliment. You can go to his website (there is a link on the main page) to learn more about his perspective. Then you can send him e-mail telling him why is unfriendly-to-environment-self-centered-rap-listening way of life is wrong. After which, he will promptly laugh at what he believes to be your stupidity and delete your e-mail.

Well, first of all I'd to make the statement that Star Trek ROKS!
*Whew*
Now that I've got that outta the way, I just wanted to respond to Zhong-min's page.
I thought that it was rather entertaining actually. I have discovered that
Zhong and myself have much in common (I think Stephen King stinks too).
Being a Math teacher, I often overlook the varied interests and abilities
of my students, especially those interests that are not traditionally
associated with Mathematics! I eventually learn, like I have with Zhong
(a particularly interesting specimen I must say), that beyond excellent
Mathematics, there is lots of other fascinating stuff going on!
And...I have not met many other people who have actually read Arthur C. Clark's
"2001"... a great book!!
share_bear from in the kitchen writing on the computer that my dad got at discount price, because he's a genius and can fix almost anything writes: First of all I'd like to state something. You sound like a pretty wierd(in a good way) guy. We have alot in common, but then again we don't. You contradict yourself alot. I have my own philoshophy also, now that I think of it and thanx for recommending some books I think i'll go clean my room so I can find my library card that I never use, because i am soo anti-library. Why go to the library when you can write books your self? anyhow!? I can see it now,the newspaper headline "Share_bear(not my real name if you haven't figured that out yet,but you seem like a smart guy,so i'm sure you did) has just stepped into a LIBRARY!" I'll just have to go against all my anit-library beliefs and take that one small leap for man(or should i say gal?). hey! that would be a great book. i'm boring i know. i guess i'll spare you some time and just leave now. but mark my words! I will be back under one condition...you MUSt sign my guestbook, because i really don't feel like writing your website addy down. i figured it'll save me heaps of pain from authritis if i just don't write anything for a while.
i'm going now. bYe!
