September 10, 2001 - Monday
A busy and varied day. It rained all day today, I think without let-up. It's exactly
like someone opened up a fire hydrant on every corner. Nothing but rain. I heard
that there is a typhoon coming to Honshu (the big island) so I hope it doesn't interfere with our plans.
I didn't have an English lesson today. I cancelled it for this week last week.
I got up and went to the main post office and bought travellers cheques. I fear for
the Canadian Dollar because I bought a lot, for the money I paid! After that I walked
to the train station and caught a train to the mall. I did my usual pilgrimage to
the theatre and discovered that once again, there was NOTHING new playing. I am so
disappointed. The book store didn't have any new magazines either so I decided to
go to Sapporo. I had lunch first, at my favourite restaurant in Mycal, then went
to the train station.
I managed to get a good seat on the train and I had an uneventful trip into the city.
Because the weather was so awful I took the subway to the bookstore. I got a couple
of cheap books and a couple of expensive magazines. Then I decided to explore Tanuki Alley. It's a long covered street area of Sapporo. I walked basically from one
end to another, but didn't find any theatres playing anything that I wanted to see.
Except one. It was playing Ghost World, but the next show didn't start for more
than an hour. I decided to go to The New York Cafe to wait. On the way there I realized
that although I could go to the movie, I had a lot of things to do in my apartment,
so I decided to eat and then go home.
I was lucky and I managed to catch a train almost right away and I had a nice trip
home. I walked home in the rain, which wasn't too pleasant, but at least I was able
to put on dry clothes when I got home. That was good.
I watched Sabrina, part of Stand by Me and ER. I enjoyed them all.
Oh yeah, I forgot, there was one strange thing today. When I was in Maruzen Books
a man came up to me and asked if I would check some pages that he'd written in English.
He seemed very nice and he offered to pay, but I'm afraid that I have a suspicious
streak a mile high so I said no. I told him that I was in a hurry. It was a bit
of a lie, but I don't really have time to help out with things for people I know,
let alone people I don't know. At least I wasn't rude!
