CONAN THE BARBARIAN COLLECTOR'S EDITION

REVIEW BY JACOB RUBINSTEIN

In the summer of 1998, I rented some dvd movies from Netflix. I had ordered Conan The Destroyer, Robocop1, and The Island of Dr. Moreau. I received Conan The Barbarian dvd instead of Conan The Destroyer. This was the first disc on Conan The barbarian on dvd and it was terrible. The picture was bad and the sound was terrible. I had thought there was something wrong with my system. I did get the Conan The Destroyer disc a few days later. but that is another story. I think the Conan The Barbarian dvd came with a trailer and production notes.

Flash forward to 2000. A brand new transfer was made for Conan The Barbarian. This new version is a Universal Collector's Edition. It has two trailers, A documentary, and Commentary by Arnold and Director John Milius. This movie is also the extended version. There is an extended ending with Conan and The Princess.

I must say that this transfer is just beautiful. It looks like it was made yesterday and not in 1982. Alot of people will complain about the movie being in mono only. I had no problem with it. It sounded just fine to me. I also have enjoyed watching movies in letterbox. This movie must be seen in widescreen. It's such a visual movie. I enjoyed the commentary by Arnold and Director John Milius. They both had alot of info about making the movie. Arnold did make a comment that Grace Jones did more damage to the stuntmen then Sandahl Bergman. The documentary also had interviews with the cast and other production people.

I hope that this disc is very successful, so we can maybe see Conan The Destroyer Special Edition. I know that alot of people didn't like the second movie that much. I think if we saw the orginal version of Conan The Destroyer. It would of been a better movie. On the plus side we would see alot of Sarah's favorite scenes that was missing in the PG rated film.
