ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
Everything you ever wanted to know about protecting the environment is here. You'll find an extensive database of environmental facts and current information on EPA programs, resources, events, news and laws. Use the ZIP code search to find trouble spots, environmental profiles and watershed conditions in your area. There are excellent sections for students and teachers, and the site is available in Spanish.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND
This nonprofit group is concerned with all types of pollution, from agricultural run-off to pesticides. Scroll down the page for interactive quizzes, news releases and reports on environmental projects. You'll also find out how you can help; there are tips on "green" electricity, recycling and vehicle use. Earth to Kids features games, art, poems and teacher resources.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
This slightly stiff but earnest site offers information on waste management, nuclear material stabilization and environmental restoration. The table of contents has information on topics as diverse as Accelerating Cleanup and Six Phase Soil Heating. The site also offers links to current and past editions of the EnviroWatch newsletter, which tackles mercury treatment, radioactive waste and environmental regulations.

NEW IDEAS IN POLLUTION REGULATION
Industrial pollution in developing countries is a major environmental concern. This site addresses the issue with an eye toward corporations' responsibilities and behavioral motivations. Cost-effective solutions, public policy models and country briefings are among the offerings here. You won't find quick statistics, but it is an excellent resource for information on industrial pollution.

NATIONAL POLLUTION PREVENTION CENTER FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
This site run by the University of Michigan is designed with students, faculty and professionals in mind, but it's useful to anyone who needs research materials. The nicely organized Resource section is a good first stop. Free information on topics that include corporate environmental strategy, agriculture and coastal zone management is available as downloadable files (which you have to read using free Adobe Acrobat software); for a fee you can get printed copies. The NPPC also offers detailed information on its projects and a long list of environmental links.

GROUND-WATER REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES ANALYSIS CENTER
This is a virtual treasure trove of technical documents and study databases about ground-water remediation technologies. A glossary of hydrogeologic terms can help the less hydro-savvy find their way through the documents. Notices about conferences on ground water and related subjects are provided, as is a toll-free number to report ground-water contamination.
