Earthtimes.com
Humanitarian and environmental causes mingle here, making this a magazine about the earth's environment on a very broad scale. The site is easy to navigate, offering highlights on the homepage as well as an index of departments and columnists. Look here for articles about forest preservation, commentary about the food crisis in Ethiopia and statistics on health issues from the World Health Organization. Departments include Human Rights, Book Reviews, Children, Economic Development, Gender Issues and Health.

Econet
EcoNet exists under the umbrella of the Institute for Global Communications, a non-profit organization whose motto is "connecting the people who are changing the world." The site functions as a virtual nerve center for environmental activists of all stripes, providing hard news on subjects like earthquake relief, timber sales and pesticides. The site also features numerous discussion groups.

Sierra Club
This organization is tops on most environmental lists, with good reason. It promotes protecting and enjoying nature, but does so in a way that is emphatic without being overzealous. The news here will keep you on top of the issues, from the debate over wolf control laws in Minnesota to solutions to urban sprawl. Local chapter listings, a guide to Sierra Club outings, a bookstore and articles from Sierra magazine complete this thorough site.

WWF Global Network
Earth itself should be as pristine as this outstanding site. With plenty of multimedia options, the World Wildlife Fund makes environmental activism fun. View photos of wildlife, watch video reports or discover animal facts in the kids' section. On the site, the WWF details its major campaigns for clean water, endangered animals and threatened ecosystems. It also provides updated news and action alerts.

Earth Day Network
Although April 22 is the official date for Earth Day, this site promotes everyday environmental awareness. Check out Grist Magazine, a "beacon in the smog," for reports on a range of issues, including endangered animals and cattle grazing. Take Action provides a few earth-saving tips as well as plenty of information on getting your community involved with Earth Day. There's also a section of fun and games, with an art contest and a video file of an interview with Leonardo DiCaprio. The film star will host this year's EarthFair on the Mall in Washington, D.C.

EE-Link
This is an efficient environmental clearinghouse. Its charms include links to student and teacher resources, professional publications, environmental organizations, data and statistics sites. For listservs and online discussion groups, go to Communities in the Professional Resources section. The site may be a bit plain, but EE-Link is easy to use, with great organization and clear descriptions of each potential resource.

The Environment: A Global Challenge
This is a good place to start if you're looking for articles on environmental problems and how economics, politics, philosophy and history have shaped the current state of environmental affairs. Just be prepared to read the text carefully; navigating this site takes patience because most links to articles are embedded in the introductory text. Steer clear of the outdated news section. Despite this, we'd recommend this site to any student who is trying to get an overview of environmental concerns and to teachers who are looking for curriculum materials.

The Wildlands Project
This organization works to protect wildlife by creating a linked system of wilderness reserves across North America. The site explains current projects in About Us and explains what is happening at each location. Around the Campfire offers commentary on a current environment-related topic--a recent piece discussed a report on extinction. The focus is on projects the organization is championing, so you won't find a broad base of news.
