Exodus 1

Exodus is the story of Moses and the deliverance of the children of Israel from bondage in Egypt to the promises land. Exodus means a going forth. It is believed that Moses wrote Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. These five books are referred to as the Pentateuch. The Torah is Judaism’s most important text. It is composed of the Five Books of Moses and also contains the 613 commandments (mitzvot) and the Ten Commandments. The word “Torah” means “to teach.” Let us be taught from the word of God.

Exo 1:1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.
Exo 1:2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

The sons of Jacob through Leah.

Exo 1:3 Issachar, Zebulun,

The other two sons by Leah

and Benjamin,

The second son of Sarah. Joseph was already in Egypt.

Exo 1:4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Sons of the concubine wives.

Exo 1:5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

Seventy from the loins of Jacob, not counting the wives or slaves.

Exo 1:6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
Exo 1:7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

They were in Egypt about 430 years, they were fruitful filling the land.

Exo 1:8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

The blessings on Israel were to be cut off with a new hostile king.

Exo 1:9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

The children of Israel were perceived to be a threat to the new king. In truth God makes Israel mighty, because he is their strength. Israel today is a tiny nation, but all the surrounding nations who try to destroy this nation, are unable to do so. Only when God's people turn from Him are they overcome.

Exo 1:10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
Exo 1:11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

Raamses was the royal city of the Egyptian kings, in the northeastern section of the Nile Delta. Pithom was a supply city near Raaamses. It seemed to be the right thing for the king to afflict the Hebrews and it was the fulfillment of a prophecy given to Jacob.

Gen 15:13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
Gen 15:14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

Remember, when things look difficult that God knows and some of what happens is in his prophecies. Look at the news and the current events with the Bible in hand.

Exo 1:12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
Exo 1:13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:
Exo 1:14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

Rigour, perek, to break apart, oppression, tyranny, cruelty. Morter and brick were made from a wet mud or clay mixture.

Exo 1:15 And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:

Shiprah means "fair" and Puah means "splendid".

Exo 1:16 And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

The stools were for bearing children, or were used by the mid wives to help deliver a baby. They were told to kill the male babies. This was the devils plot to destroy the deliverer of God's people. Satan always tried to destroy God's special people. Moses as a baby and Jesus were under a cruel king that tried to kill them.

In the book of Acts, Steven testified of this time before his accusers.

Act 7:17 But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
Act 7:18 Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
Act 7:19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

Exo 1:17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

They both feared god more than the king. I wish this was so in the abortion clinics.

When Daniel faced danger in the lions den, God kept him safe. This changed the heart of King Darius.

Dan 6:26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.

Pro 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Seeing the destruction in the news concerning Ferguson today shows the wickedness of people who do not fear God.

Exo 1:18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
Exo 1:19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.
Exo 1:20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

I like this, even if they were stretching the truth to protect the babies; they were blessed by God and were not punished by the king.

Exo 1:21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

God provided households for them, dwellings and decendants; like the house of Jacob.

Psa 127:1 A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Exo 1:22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.

I have heard that in China and in India where the births are restricted that there are more male babies. This has made a shortage of women as wives.
