Paul writes to Timothy

Paul speaking to the elders of the church in Ephesus, leaves a final greeting and warning.

Acts 20:25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.
Acts 20:26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.
Acts 20:27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.
Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Acts 20:29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
Acts 20:30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
Acts 20:31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

Timothy was sent to this church after problems became evident. In this epistle Paul writes to Timothy to encourage him in his duties as a pastor.

1 Tim 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;

Paul received his command to be the apostle to the Gentiles, from the Lord.

Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you (Jews): but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. Acts 13:47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

1 Tim 1:2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

Timothy was Paul's spiritual son, probably he led Timothy to the Lord. A father-son relationship endures. Others may come and go, but this spiritual relationship is everlasting.

Phil 2:19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
Phil 2:20 For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.
Phil 2:21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.
Phil 2:22 But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.

I have spiritual daughters who share things with me, son's too, but have not heard from them much. When I see them, I run to them as the father to the prodigal son who came home.

1 Tim 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

Paul, speaking to Timothy, reminds him of his duties in Ephesus. As a pastor, he was to speak the truth of the gospel and to keep other doctrines away from them. As Christians we are not to listen to false doctrines.

People do not care about absolute truths today, either. They are taught in schools, that what is true for you is truth. This was the philosophy of Socrates in ancient Greece. The word of this day is tolerance. Tolerance for every strange thought, but seemingly no tolerance for Jesus and absolute truth. A Christian world view has given way to heathen thinking. Paganism and Wicca, witchcraft are being taught as "their truth." We have the same challenge as Timothy had in the Ephesian church. We must speak sound doctrine, speaking the beliefs of Christianity.

1 Tim 1:4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

Do not give heed, to fables, man made religions, doctrines of demons. Genealogies, thinking by blood we have a better standing before God or by the practice of praying for departed family members. These are a waste of time and bring foolish questions, rather than godly edifying. We are to speak sound doctrine that builds the church.

We are not to preach funny stories, and manmade words that entertain, leaving out the edifying words of God. God's word should not be to entertain or be for fun. It is to convict of sin and to build character. To those who love God, his words will be received with joy.

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
James 4:9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

1 Tim 1:5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

The purpose of the commandment or the law, is love out of a pure heart, and a good conscience and real faith. This was the building of a godly life and heart, filled with faith. Not as the legalistic law keepers, who kept laws and imposed burdens on others, but were inwardly evil. Jesus spoke of these, dead in spirit, law keepers.

Mat 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
Mat 23:28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

1 Tim 1:6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

Swerved away from sound doctrine to "vain janglings", from the Greek word matiologia, Two words together; mataios, "vain," and logos, "word." futile talk, worthless, empty, meaningless babble, and idle prattle. Teachers who love their own words, but have nothing to say. They speak without sound doctrine. I suppose to the unsaved, the word of God is as babble, but the hearing and receiving of the gospel will save their soul from hell.

1 Cor 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
1 Cor 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1 Cor 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1 Cor 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

1 Tim 1:7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

They wish to teach the old testament law, while claiming the new to not be of God. But, they not knowing the spirit of the law, they know not the evidence for the coming Christ. They are trouble makers full of debate and strife.

1 Tim 1:8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

Paul speaks against the legalists and false teachers, but not against the law.

Rom 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

1 Tim 1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
1 Tim 1:10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

The law points out sin. We must know sin before we will seek forgiveness. In our culture sin is not taught. When truth is taught as "what is truth to you." When they are taught self esteem instead of God's moral laws, when tolerance means tolerance for sins, the laws of God are needed. We need the ten commandments to be taught in every school. Instead a minority has taken these things out of our nation. We must to stand for God's truth, with hearts truly changed by our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Tim 1:11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

Although the law cannot make one righteous, the gospel can. We are committed to the responsibility to preach the gospel of Christ.

Rom 1:14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.
Rom 1:15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.
Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Rom 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Guard the truth, as those chosen of God to bring the truth to a sinful people. If we do not speak? How will they hear?

A Good Warfare

1 Tim 1:12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

Being faithful is important, and being called, we are enabled to do His work. God called the twelve disciples, and equipped them for ministry.

Mat 10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Paul was the last of the apostles to be called.

1 Cor 15:8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
1 Cor 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
1 Cor 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

1 Tim 1:13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

Thinking he was serving God by being zealous for his law keeping, he destroyed God's children, in ignorance.

1 Tim 1:14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

Rom 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Tim 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

1 Tim 1:16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

If Saul can be saved, so can we. We should not write people off, but rather pray for them, that they might hear and receive the word of faith.

1 Tim 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Paul speaks a prayer to honor and glorify God. We do not glorify God by saying our silly words, such as, the old man upstairs, this does not glorify God. We glorify him be speaking back to him what he has spoken in His word.

King Eternal

Psa 10:16 The LORD is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land.
Psa 145:1 David's Psalm of praise. I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.
Psa 145:2 Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.
Psa 145:3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.
Psa 145:4 One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.
Psa 145:5 I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.

He is Immortal

1 Cor 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1 Cor 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
1 Cor 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
1 Cor 15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
1 Cor 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Cor 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

He is invisable

John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
John 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

1 Tim 1:18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

The word for charge, was a military term, an order from a commander. According to past prophecies, the word of God through others concerning his calling. Prophesies must be according to God's word and confirmed by another witness; that could also be the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

I personally was given a prophecy to let the word spring forth and be alive. I love the word and teaching. and doors have opened to do this in church and on the Internet.

Timothy was told to be strong in the spirit for he would be doing spiritual warfare. This applies to all of us who proclaim the word of God.

1 Cor 16:13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
1 Cor 16:14 Let all your things be done with charity.

2 Cor 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
2 Cor 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

One of the weapons we must have is the shield of faith, without it we will fail.

Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

1 Tim 1:19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

Faith and obedience, casting down every bad thought, and speaking from the heart God's word of faith, believing what he says.

Shipwrecked; losing faith, losing hope, forgetting what we once trusted. Often this is because of the lusts of the flesh. Sin enters in and with it doubt.

1 Cor 9:25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
1 Cor 9:26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
1 Cor 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

1 Tim 1:20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

We do not know about these two, but only that they were blaspheming the things of God. This was not allowed within the church. They were cast out of the church into the world, which is satan's domain. Paul delivered another to satan in Corinth, who would not repent.

1 Cor 5:2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
1 Cor 5:3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
1 Cor 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
1 Cor 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
1 Cor 5:6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
1 Cor 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

We are responsible to keep our bodies pure from sin and to remove those from church, gatherings of Bible teaching, or Internet chat rooms who blaspheme and who will not repent from their evil ways.

We must be faithful servants of the Lord, both in speaking forth the gospel message and in keeping our lives free from sin, so that we may not be accused by the adversary. We are in spiritual warfare against a known foe. Our job is to reach out to the lost and to keep the church and the teaching of God's word pure and in truth. We can only do this by submitting in faith to the leading of God as we study His word and walk in His Spirit.
