The American Santa Claus originally came the Dutch Saint Nicholas. The Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam, which is now New York, brought this to America. The single most important source for our modern day version of Santa Claus comes from the Christmas poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas by Clement C. Moore in 1822
