CLOUDS AND FENCES AFGHAN

Copywrite 2005, Carrie Viskozki. This pattern is provided for your personal use only. Please do not copy to another web site without permission.

I’m left-handed, so the picture you see shows the stitches leaning the opposite way than they will if you are right-handed. The first picture is of the 'fences' side. The second is of the 'clouds' side.

Materials: Lion Brand Suede – Olive, Spice, Mocha, Coffee, and Taupe. Approximately 4 skeins of each color. Size “K” Hook. I crocheted a throw that is approximately 45” x 62”. Each color section is about 7”, using two skeins for each section. This yarn is incredibly easy to work with, more so than the 'chenille' or 'velvet' variety. It's very thick, and creates the most luxurious material I've ever worked with. It's expensive - but sooo worth it if you want to make something that's really special.

Pattern Stitch – Cloud is comprised of 1 SC and 2 DC’s made in one space or stitch.

Pattern Stitch – Fence is formed by the HDC row that alternates between the Cloud rows.

Foundation – Chain multiples of 3 +1.

Row 1 – HDC in second ch from hook. HDC in each ch across.

Row 2 – ch 1, turn. HDC in first hdc, skip second hdc. *1 SC, 2 DC in next hdc (cloud made). Skip next hdc*. Repeat * to * to end of row, HDC in last hdc of previous row.

Row 3 – ch 1, turn. Skip first hdc. *HDC in next two DC’s. Skip next sc*. Repeat * to * to end of row. HDC in last hdc of previous row.

Row 4 – ch 1, turn. HDC in first hdc. *1 SC, 2 DC in next hdc (cloud made). Skip next hdc*. (Please note that you have NOT skipped the second hdc as in Row 2). Repeat * to * to end of row, HDC in last hdc of previous row.

Row 5 – Repeat Row 3.

Row 6 – End Row – Repeat Rows 2 – 4 until you have reached your desired length of afghan. Finish with one repeat of Row 3.

Again, please note that Rows 2 and 4 are ALMOST identical, except that on one row, you are skipping the second HDC. On the alternate row you are NOT skipping the second HDC. The reason for this is that your ‘clouds’ need to be off/on ‘center’ on the alternate rows in order to lay properly. Also it keeps your edges even, instead of ‘fanning out’. If you are confused, work 10 rows as a gauge swatch, and you will see.
