Copywrite 2005, Carrie Viskozki. This pattern is provided for your personal use only. Please do not copy to another web site without permission.

Items Needed:

4 oz. of Worsted Weight yarn, any color. You can use a couple of ounces of a complimentary color for the brim edge if you like.

H Hook

Size: Infant, Child, Adult, X-Large Stitch Explanation: DC – Double Crochet, HDC – Half Double Crochet

All sizes start out the same

(Infant)

Round One: Make a loop around your fingers and start crocheting in the circle (you can tighten the circle by pulling the loose end when you have completed round one), or chain 4 and join to make a circle.

Chain 3 (first DC) 11 double crochet (DC) in beginning circle. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 12 DC

Round 2: Chain 3, DC in same space. Two DC in each stitich around. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 24 DC

Round 3: Chain 3, two DC in next stitch. (DC in next stitch, two DC in next stitch) around to beginning chain. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 36 DC

Round 4: Chain 3, one DC in next stitch, two DC in next stitch. (DC in next two stitches, two DC in next stitch) around to beginning chain. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 48 DC

Round 5: (This instruction is for Infant Only. For larger sizes, skip down to appropriate size) Chain 3, one DC in next 6 stitches, two DC in 8th stitch. (DC in next 7 stitches, two DC in next stitch) around to beginning chain. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 54 DC

Round 6 – 14: Chain 3, one DC in each stitch around. Join to third chain beginning chain. 54DC

Last round: The last round is worked in HDC in the back loops. Decrease every 8 stitches to give a snugger fit around the brim edge. Crocheting in the back loops will give it a ‘finished edge’ look. You don’t have to do this, but I would at least recommend the decreasing so that the hat will fit properly and not ‘fan out’ at the brim edge. Weave in ends.

(Child) Follow instructions for Infant hat through round 4, continue with the following instructions.

Round 5: Chain 3, one DC in next two stitches, two DC in next stitch. (DC in next 3 stitches, two DC in next stitch) around to beginning chain. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 60 DC Round 6: Chain 3, one DC in next 8 stitches, two DC in 10th stitch. (DC in next 9 stitches, two DC in next stitch) around to beginning chain. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 66 DC

Round 6 – 17: Chain 3, one DC in each stitch around. Join to third chain beginning chain. 66DC

Last Round: The last round is worked in HDC in the back loops. Decrease every 10 stitches to give a snugger fit around the brim edge. Crocheting in the back loops will give it a ‘finished edge’ look. You don’t have to do this, but I would at least recommend the decreasing so that the hat will fit properly and not ‘fan out’ at the brim edge. Weave in ends.

(Adult) Follow instructions for Infant hat through round 4, continue with the following instructions.

Round 5: Chain 3, one DC in next two stitches, two DC in next stitch. (DC in next 3 stitches, two DC in next stitch) around to beginning chain. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 60 DC

Round 6: Chain 3, one DC in next three stitches, two DC in next stitch. (DC in next 4 stitches, two DC in next stitch) around to beginning chain. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 72 DC

Round 7: Chain 3, one DC in next 10 stitches, two DC in 12th stitch. (DC in next 11 stitiches, two DC in next stitch) around to beginning chain. Join to third chain of beginning chain. 78 DC

Round 6 – 17: Chain 3, one DC in each stitch around. Join to third chain beginning chain. 78DC

Last Round: The last round is worked in HDC in the back loops. Decrease every 12 stitches to give a snugger fit around the brim edge. Crocheting in the back loops will give it a ‘finished edge’ look. You don’t have to do this, but I would at least recommend the decreasing so that the hat will fit properly and not ‘fan out’ at the brim edge. Weave in ends

(X-Large) Work the same as the instructions for the Adult Hat through Round 17. Repeat Round 17 twice.

Weave in ends.

To give the hat a more interesting look, try working a FP (Front Post) stitch around every other stitch, starting on Round 12 for the Small Hat, and on Round 14 of all other sizes to give it a ‘cable stitch’ look.
