Note: Instructions are written for size Small. Medium and Large instructions are in brackets. Materials: Lion Brand Microspun, 6-ply sports yarn. Black – 4(5-6) ounces. White – 11(13-16) ounces. Size G hook (or size needed for gauge).

Body

Using Black, chain 96 (120-144). Join with beginning chain, being careful not to twist chain. Do not finish off.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, hdc in same ch, and in each ch around. Join to beginning hdc. 96(120-144) hdc. Do not finish off.

Rnd. 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next stitch, ch 2, dc in same stitch. Dc in next 23(29-35) stitches. *(DC, chain 2, dc) in next stitch. DC in next 23(29-35) stitches*. Repeat from * 2 times. Join with slip stitch to first Dc. Finish off. 100(124-148) dc.

Rnd 3: Using White, join in any chain 2 space. Ch 4, dc in same space. Ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1 in same space. (Skip next dc, dc in next dc, ch 1 across to next corner space. Dc, ch 1 dc in space, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1 in same space). Repeat from ( ) around to beginning stitch. Join with slip stitch to first Dc. Do not finish off. 40 (64-88) dc. 4 ch 2 spaces.

Rnd 4: Slip stitch to next ch 1 space. Ch 3, dc in same space, 2 dc in each ch 1 space to corner. (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner space. 2 dc in each ch 1 space across to corner). *****Note, there are 5 dc’s in each corner space!! Repeat from ( ) around to beginning stitch. Join with slip stitch to first dc. Do not finish off. 140 (164-188) dc.

Rnd 5: Ch 4, skip next dc, dc in next dc, ch 1. (Skip next dc, dc in next dc, ch 1 to corner space. Dc, ch 1 dc in space, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1 in same space). Repeat from ( ) around to beginning stitch. Join with slip stitch to first Dc. Finish off. 60 (84-108) dc, 4 ch 2 spaces.

Rnd 6: Using Black, join in any ch 2 space. Ch 3, dc in same space. Ch 2, 3 dc in same space. (2 dc in each ch 1 space across to corner. 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner). *****Note, there are 5 dc’s in each corner space!! Repat from ( ) around to beginning stitch. Join with slip stitch to first dc. Finish off. 188 (212-236) dc. 4 ch 2 spaces.

Rnd 7-38: Repeat Rounds 3 – 6, 7 times. 820(844-868) dc.

Fringe (optional): Cut strands of yarn, 10” each. I used two strands and put fringe in every other space around the poncho.

To help you keep count, the following grid shows the number of stitches for each round for a Large size Poncho. Please note, Round 3 and 5 and each repeat of those rows shows DC’s only…not spaces. The shaded cells will help you keep track of the color sequence.
