This pattern was designed specifically for the VA Nursing Home Patients at the VA Hospital in Dallas, TX.

Finished Size: Approximately 36” x 48”

Materials:

Red Heart Yarn (Super Saver – 8 oz.) – Cherry Red, Soft White and Royal Blue.

Size “H” crochet hook (Susan Bates was used for this pattern)

Special Stitch: FPT (Front Post Treble) – Yarn over twice, insert hook around stitch indicated. (Yarn over, draw hook through two loops) three times.

Gauge:

Work pattern through Rnd 4. Swatch should be approximately 5 3/4” x 3 3/4”.

With red – Chain 12.

Rnd. 1 - 7 dc in 4th ch from hook. (3 skipped ch represents first dc). Dc in next 7 ch, 7 dc in last ch. Dc in open loop of next 7 ch, join to top of first dc. (28 dc’s)

Rnd 2 – Chain 3 (counts as first dc throughout). DC in next dc. *2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in next dc. Dc in next 5 dc. 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in next dc*. Dc along side to second dc in 7-dc end. Repeat from * to *. Dc along side to beginning dc. Join with slipstitch to first dc. (40 dc’s)

Rnd 3 – Chain 3, dc in each dc across to chain 2 space. 3 dc in ch 1 space. *Dc in each dc across to next ch 1 space. 3 dc in ch 1 space. Repeat from * around. Dc in each dc to beginning. Join with slipstitch to first dc. (52 dc’s)

Rnd 4 – Ch 3, *dc in each dc across to corner dc (middle dc of 3 dc grouping of last round). 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in corner dc. Repeat from * around. Dc in remaining dc’s to beginning. Join with slipstitch to first dc. Finish off. (64 dc’s)

This is a larger example of the red center, with more FPT's added to give a different look. It is just for an example.

Rnd 5 – STARTING ON SHORT SIDE: Join with White in chain 2 corner starting on short side. Chain 3, 2 dc in corner. (Working in back loops only along side, dc in each stitch to stitch just before center of row, *FPT (Front Post Treble) stitch in next dc two rows below. Working in back loops only dc in each stitch to end of row. STARTING ON LONG SIDE: 3 dc’s in corner chain 2 space. (Working in back loops only along side, dc in each stitch to stitch just before center of row, FPT (Front Post Treble) stitch in next dc two rows below. Working in back loops only dc in each stitch to end of row. (76 dc's)

REPEAT SHORT SIDE DIRECTIONS ONCE , THEN LONG SIDE DIRECTIONS ONCE.

Rnd 6 through 8 – Repeat Round 3 and 4, alternately. Finish off after rd 8. (112 dc’s)

Round 9 - STARTING ON SHORT SIDE: Join with Blue in chain 2 corner starting on short side. Chain 3, 2 dc in corner. (Working in back loops only along side, dc in each stitch to stitch just before center of row, *FPT (Front Post Treble) stitch in next dc two rows below. Working in back loops only dc in each stitch to end of row. STARTING ON LONG SIDE: 3 dc’s in corner chain 2 space. (Working in back loops only along side, dc in each stitch to stitch just before center of row, FPT (Front Post Treble) stitch in next dc two rows below. Working in back loops only dc in each stitch to end of row. (124 dc's)

Rnd 10 through 12 – Repeat Round 3 and 4, alternately. Finish off after rd 12. (160 dc’s)

Rnd 13 through 16 - Using Red, repeat Round 9 through 12. Finish off after rd 16. (208 dc's)

Rnd 17 through 20 - Using White, repeat Round 9 - 12. Finsh off after rd 20. (256 dc's)

Rnd 21 through 24 - Using Blue, repeat Round 9 - 12. Finish off after rd 24. (304 dc's)

Rnd 25 through 36 – Repeat Round 13 through 24. (448 dc’s)
