June 71 to June 72. I was a MM2 prototyper when I came on board. Qualified (barely) my second patrol. Left as a MM1 for some hospital time. I remember the "drill from hell." They were drilling the hell out of us for a nuclear weapons inspection when e got to Rota. As an ELT, I was involved in all of them, power plant or weapons. I was in the crew's lounge head (facing aft) when the collision alarm sounded. You might remember me as the guy who started carriying a pocket card after the snake chewed my ass during a critique. It might have been hell at the time, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Hope to hear from any of the Goldies 71-72.

I'm trying to remember when I went aboard the AJ as a RM2. Maybe 1971? Crawling around with my qual book in my poopy suit back pocket and getting sign-offs was all that mattered. Once a system was signed off, that line in the qual book would get the co ored pencil. Learning valves behind the port side engine room auxiliary steam cooling water tank I got a tiny burn on one of my middle fingers. Soon the very tiny wound had developed into a swollen purple-orange sort that was so ugly that no wanted want d to sit with me on the mess deck. I remember a Scotty RM1(SS) in the radio shack, a Lt. Eiserloh as Communication Officer, and a Fahrenkug RM1(SS), in the radio shack, of course. Our home was COMSUBFLOT 6 in Charleston, South Carolina. We operated out of Rota, Spain. I was Gold Crew. On our second patrol, I qualified and became RM2(SS). Things happened. We had one drill whereby a freightened voice came over the 1MC saying "General Quarters! Flooding! Flooding in the engineroom." Right then we to k a steep angle, stern down, bow up, and began sliding back, down, back, down, the engine making big turns trying, I guess, to fight the drill and power us back up. We had a depth gauge in the radio shack because we had a buoy antenna to fly on occasion. The depth gauge was going, going. I thought we were done. The drill was way too realistic. I had smoked marijuana during off crew back in Charleston, and the NIS had found out about it. I was on watch checking messages when my name came across the wir . At the end of the patrol, send Maass back to Charleston for investigation, it read. -- Anyway, I don't think I was cut out to be a submariner. I guess we were at Holy Loch on this second patrol. Yeah, because I was sent to the Tender to chip paint o tside their radio shack. Two other Jackson crew got sent back with me, because the COB had found women's clothing in their lockers. Back at Charleston I beat the marijuana accusation by giving only my name, rank, and service number, like any other POW. The Vietnam thing was still "thriving," and attitudes were wearing. No, I guess the pot thing happened when I was on the U.S.S. Ulysses S. Grant (SSBN 631), actually. That's right. I guess the pot affected my memory :-) Anyway, I had left the Jackson, because I had not been invited for some kind of refit. I don't remember all the details. Sometimes I was nostalgic, and want to remember. Other times, I just forget I ever served anywhere in the military. A lot of guys went on to great things, and I t rned out to never get much going. I drank too much every chance I got. Turns out I was clinically depressed. About being on one of the 41 For Freedom, I know I was there, and did my best. I earned my dolphins, and was proud of them. It was a real adv nture. All-in-all, I don't think I liked the follow-through that came after submarine school. It was a rough ride, a hard study, and a lonely job. On one of those two boats a guy died. I honor him here. We couldn't surface and haul him home, so he wa shoved into the freezer. We hauled him along for the duration of the patrol. Hello Mr. Eiserloh, Scotty, and Fahrenkrug. Signed, Kinky

Your web page brings tears to my eyes. The Jackson was a one of a kind - one of the best of the best. I qualified in 1968, two weeks into my second patrol. They waived qualifications on my first patrol since she was supposed to go into overhaul after t at patrol, however I figured I would try to get the job done in one patrol. I almost made it and fortunately we had to make the second. We put the Jackson into Kittery (sp?)Maine and I went on to join the Lafayette. I would have loved to stay on the Ja kson however my uncle was on the development team for the S5W reactor and he has nothing good to say about Kettery after the Scorpion went down. He claimed there should have been criminal action taken against the shipyard. Thank you for the reunion and ll your effort. I will look for photographs, however I think they are few. Thanks again for the effort on a great Webb Page. The AJ was a great boat, and the initial crews made her that way. Thank you Chew for the quick response on getting the pictures on line. I'll dig a little deeper and see if I can find my pictures of the co missioning of the AJ. Enjoyed perusing the guestbook again. Seem to recall someone asking about the 1st patrol. I wasn't on the 1st but was in Rota to meet and participate in relieving the Blue crew who did make the 1st. I was also in Charlestown SC to h lp in bidding the Blue Bon Voyage on the first. I think the Blue Crew did have a few days more at sea (thus longer deployed patrol than the following (normal patrols). This was due to the transit time etc. But the first full patrol including tender upkeep (in Rota) and sea time, by the Gold crew, was a definite make up for the extra days at sea by the Blue crew. I think at first the normal cycle, was upkeep 28 days, and Sea deployment 65-68 days. Shorter periods than now days but exciting ???? just the sam .. We did our best to do our duty in helping keep peace in the world. My prayers go out to all who pull duty on submarines still, may they remain diligent always. And may we remember those on eternal patrol. Hopefully their sacrifice will one day a bring a lasting peace for posterity. Sincerely, Bill Tatton Looking forward to Sept 2001

Excited to come across the website and read about former shipmates out there. On the AJ 6/86-10/88 as a NAVET/Sweaterhead. Xferred the morning she departed Groton for Charleston. Moved down the river to precom the PENNSYLVANIA. Took the ECP route then a JO/SWO tour aboard a target. Makes one really appreciate the comaraderie that exists throughout the sub community. Some boats have more than others, but each one has more than the surface community can dream of. On my way back to the boats. Going to SOBC after all these years as a refresher then off to the GEORGIA for one more patrol. Next destination as an EDO working boats at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Looking forward to reading the LOG again.

After a rather stimulating sermon in church this past Sunday concerning confessing sins, I thought now was an opportunity to get something off my chest that has been bothering me for 30 years. During the winter patrol, gold crew, of 1970, it was myself an Ron Carr that stole the door off the XO'S stateroom. We hid it in the Goat Locker under a mattress. In fact, I think it was under the COBB'S Mattress. I told the XO I didn't know anything about it. He threatened Mast if he found I was involved. Sorry XO, I lied to you.

I was an STS2/SS during the Holy Loch days. I really enjoyed seeing a site dedicated to those of us who served aboard one of the best boats in the fleet! I haven't got nostalgic until recently. The technology of the internet and computers has really ma e this possible. I remember the first desktop we had on board in Sonar, it was a Tektronix 4051, what a piece of junk that was. If anyone from that era sees this, please contact me, I would love to hear from you.

Just viewed the log and saw people were entering much more info... I was a NAV/ET (SINS Tech) beginning with Patrol 30, then the evens up to 38. My first patrol was a Bluenose Patrol, and I was accepted into the realm by "Buz" Solberger (see entry below). Lucky me, I crossed the Equator on the Hunley AS-31, and believe me, it's a much messier ceremony when you have a whole helo deck to slime. As for fellow 619ers, went to Paul Stickler's retirement, met Kerry Kimmel here in Maryland, still in contact with Bruce Applegate, saw Art Stanley on the job, found Jeff Becker on-line in Tennesee, Mike Gray (pinned my dolphins on me)shows up from time t time, and Orville Sweeney crossed my path on a couple of occasions. I work with Dave Brown who was a Navigator on the AJ (late 60's?) early in his career, and Gary McPherson (the Blue Crew McPherson, after the yards) used to work with me also. The COB on the 743 when it went to Firing DASO in 1997 was a storekeeper on the AJ Gold (dang, his name escapes me), and QM Gary Johnson was the MCPOC in Bangor when I saw him in August 99. As you can tell, I still work in submarines,I've been on too many now to count. I work on a lot of fast attacks, and I make sure the picture of my patrol pin is on my laptop for all to see. I went back to Scotland earlier this year, to Faslane. It's a stones throw from Holy Loch, but a considerable distance by land, so I didn't get enough time to visit Dunoon. Glad to know some of you are still alive, I'm kind of surprised I made it this long. I still have pictures of the boat, my favorite is when it left without me on that famous surface voyage from Groton to the drydock in Charleston following our stint on the rocks south of the Thames (Mike Gray says they still use that incident for training at PCO school). Also have a picture of the boat tied to a pier in St. Croix, given to me by Marvin Brumbaugh. I still quote the "modified motto" of the AJ - "The Man With Authority IS the Majority." Cheers.

I had not heard of the '01 reunion, so I hope that someone will put me on the list. I'd like to attend at least one before I forget that I ever served on the AJ. I do remember, though, the gripes that we (supply) got for serving lobster and steak for dinner too often. What a bunch of whiners!! I forget what Chief DuFour said, but the malcontents soon got the message. Hoping to last 'til '01. Bill

The picture at dock side was taken at Port Canaveral. Late July 1969. I have a copy at home and you can see the T/E mast they put on to track us as we went through ORSE boards and NWAI inspection. I believe it was after 20 Jul, since Barry Russack brou ht his TV down to the boat at the Weapons Station and we could watch the landing on the moon. We set the TV up in the torpedo room and ran the antenna wire up through the torpedo loading hatch. I was on duty that night. I believe we left there and went to the Cape. After the Cape, we went straight to Norfolk and turned the boat over to the Gold Crew and they took it throught the deperming crib. The night we left the Cape, the James Monroe pulled into our berth and their Asst. Weapons Officer stuck the MK45 trainer torpedo up the rear end of the destroyer moored in front of us.

Hi guys. Wow Bob, you've done a fabulous job with this site. It's opened up the flood gates to a gush of memories, some of which were recently rehashed. I hooked up with a couple of AJ Gold alums last weekend in Orlando. Gene Kubicki and Ken Pallagi b ought their families down for a week of fun and sun. I drove up from Miami and spent the weekend with them relivin' sea stories and smokin' Cuban cigars. Of coarse it wouldn't have been complete without a cameo appearance from Captain Morgan. Rick McElroy, yours and K3's names came up when we were wondering what ever happened to this or that person. I was glad to see you'd signed into the log. I'm still a nuke today. I work for Florida Power and Light at Turkey Point Nuclear (OPS Requal Trai ing for those in the business). Dennis Garner and Bruce Harrigan are there as well. Don Kenny is still at Calvert Cliffs (I was an SRO there for 16 years after I got out). Chuck Achen was there also but decided to move to California and carve wooden du ks. Chuck, the Nuclear Navy has been a segway to many avenues but yours was a new branch buddy. Does anyone know what happened to Glen Sherman? I'd really like to get in touch with him. Email me with any info. I've been hearing rumors about an AJ reunion next year. Bob I haven't seen any details here on the web site. If someone is organizing a reunion, please email the info to me. Anybody know where the MT-Logbook that was hidden behind the Integrated Monitoring Panel for all those years went? New XO around patrol#70 was a real burrower, only one to ever discover the still during one of his infamous explorations during field days. He actually skinnied-up between the main ballast tanks from MCLL to MCML. Said his "nose" led him. We said it must have been the nukes. Hey, it was their poly-bottles & tubing! Worst stuff I ever tasted, except for Haggis. Wonder if anybody ever got the rights to salvage the bottom of the Holyloch. Must be a million bucks worth of parts down there. At least one rifle and shotgun from AJ-Gold's topside sentry's are down there. Along with a lot of paint that we were suppose to use in our "spare time". Scott P. and I tried to get it below, but the darn cans were so slippery...seven patrols of covering targets for broke-down boats so they could get our port calls... Almost back to the 'Loch after 68 days out, had the inverter out, and Lafayette lost the ball and we had to stuff-em and head back out for 12 more days of their targets. Nothing to eat but powdered eggs and peanut butter! So the old man had us field-day, just to stay happy. Have a picture of an FTB covered with body paint at Launcher. If you're scared, say you're scared.

My father (Andrew's grandfather) was a Navy jet mechanic and raised us on Patriotism, dedication and all things Navy. He is an aviation historian, but we love our boats!!! Andrew just built a 1:200 scale model of "Old Hickory", which he and his Dad foun in a local antique store. Looks like a late 60's, early 70's model, all pieces included in the original box, what a boat! Which led us to your website-fantastic-wish all vets would put our rich past into a historical perspective we can all touch, feel and become a part of. Kudos to you and your buddies, the letter from the President is a precious jewel, keep up the good work Looking forward to seeing your updates to the site and new entries. Just came across your page(s) by accident. I don't know if you are on the growing list of people who have expressed interest in a reunion schedurled in April 2001. I can be better reached at home at: dpsternberg@home.com I was Blue crew COMM, SOANR, E, RC and IC division officer then and went through the first over haul leaving active duty in May 69. In a brown and white picture on the Scuttlebutt page, I think I might be in the picture. Sort of neat if so. I have volunteered to set up a data base for the growing number of people but have been waiting to resolve about 10 bad E-mail addresses. You may be on the long address or not. I'll check and if not send Sam Eddy (the old noseconer from the upper level) our page address. Just want to let the plank holder and first Blue crew, that Cap. Whittle died three years ago. I read with interest - and sadness - about the Andrew Jackson. I saw a picture of her, rusting, lying in wait for SRP (Ship/Submarine Recycling Program) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton Washington (http://donshelton.net/djs-rp1.htm). It seems that sometimes we hated her and that sometimes we were proud. Our emotions fluctuated with the c rcumstances. But she consistently offered a warm and inviting embrace after a long, bitter night of shore leave in the frozen winter nights of Holy Loch. As I stared at the picture, it seem like we had turned our backs on her. As it states in that web age, "Presently, submarines are completely scrapped once they enter the dry-dock. They are no longer refloated. Once a submarine enters the dry dock, their fate is sealed. Only scrap metal leaves the dry-dock." She's now gone, disassembly completed Decemb r 1, 1998. Reading these pages opened a door that had been shut for two decades. It's funny. After all I've done, after all of the places I've been, I never feel like the experiences became part of me. Somehow I had failed to become part of them, engaged but not absorbed. This is not the case here. I feel strangely connected to this ship, to my shipmates, to that time in my life. Twenty years of separation and silence has not erased the bond. I guess in the recesses of who I am remains that ET1/SS SSBN 619G crew member. I served on her between February 1976 - January 1980. I read that Steve Stanley went on to command. He was my first Division Officer. Jim Adams, my last, also has command. Congratulations. I'm proud to have served with both of you. To other shipmates - Bob Enoch, George Wadsworth, Tom Sorrentino, Jeff Davis - I salute our shared memories of transition from civilian boys to men of the sea. We celebrated together and, occasionally, suffered together. But we were together, like brothers. I thought you'd be interested to learn that I have been married for 15 years (Renee) and have a 14 year old daughter (Ashley). We live in Raleigh, North Carolina. While in the Navy I wanted to return to school. I have done so - my wife thinks with a ve geance. I earned a B.S., Nuclear Engineering Technology; B.S., Organization Management; and M.A,, Organization Design and Effectiveness. I'm exploring Ph.D. programs, but I don't know if I want to continue. I licensed with the NRC, started (and lost in the recession of 1990-1991) a Florida-based business and have lived in six states since leaving the Navy (some more than once!). I eagerly await any correspondence from my shipmates. I offer my best wishes for all of them.

Wow! Where do I start? Reading through the log brought back lots of great memories; both good and bad. I came onboard in March 1975 and got helped off by XO Muller in 1977. I was an HM3(SS) and stood sonar watches at sea with Billy Palmer --under whom learned some of the greatest practical jokes (mostly having to do with blowing sanitarys) ever played on a sailor-- and it was great to hear he made Master Chief. I was onboard during the incident with the exercycle speedometer turned up missing. Due m stly to the stupidity of XO Muller not telling us that he had a bet with XO Gray of the Gold crew over which crew could put more miles on the exercycle. Does anyone remember who the MM was that keyed the 2MC and said, "BOHICA!" during the CO's announceme t being made on the 1MC? I'm also looking for an MM3 named Bodan Prypin that served on the AJ from 75 to 77. If someone knows where he is, pass my e-mail on to him. Looking far forward to Peoria 2001.
