Wayne Kropp - 12/27/99 00:33:19 My Email:kroppkns@CS.com Boat: SSBN 619 | Comments: Hi shipmate. I also came aboard the Andrew in the shipyard in the winter of '69. I eventually was on the blue crew until I got out in '71. Dick Graybill, Peal Potvin, and Bill Vestka were my fellow ROs. Were you on the gold crew. I can not remember you. ut then again, you are the one that probably said By the Way!! I can tell you some stories from the blue crew!! There was one time when the exec overrode the solenoid for the snorkel while we had the low pressure blower running to do a quiet surface. Gue s what became a pump!! The electricians were not happy! They spent days cleaning the motor. It is not often that you see water coming from the ventilation duct in AMR 2 UL. Hey drop me a line. Have you heard from any other of our shipmates?? |

I served on AJ(B) from 85-88 and was the MT who removed the nose cones off o the last 16 C-3 missiles to grace her tubes. I was there when some bonehead captain was performing an inspection of the reduction gears as part of the mini overhaul we had performed in Scottland when he dropped one of his eagles (which he wasn't suppose to have on at the time)in the reduction gears causing an extended stay in port while they fixed it. Irby, do you remember the halfway night party when you won the Miss AJ contest?? I beleive you still owe us a kegger with the $200 you won. I reported aboard the AJ-B '75-'77 and was a TM3 in Sherwood Forest (or Mouse House) during the great "GHOST RIDER" escapades (that's what we and the s ips paper called it). Can't wait to see all the guys from my first boat, hopefully the MM1 (nuke) that was the ship's diver at the time will also be there and if you are reading this, we WON'T, repeat WON'T be performing any of those HEART CHECK PUNCHES!! We're too old for that. I was in the crews mess when that MK14 went banging donw the port side, left a few scratches in the ol' paint. Just missed the emergency blow from TD during sea trials, I was in the off-crew office reporting on-board. Many, many m re memories are coming back, way too many to relate here and now, gotta save some for other e-mails and for the reunion. |
Dave Mitchell - 10/24/99 13:50:11 My Email:chefbasket@aol Boat: 619 | Comments: I was on the AJ with Plummer, Trail, Carter, Adams and company during the overhaul at EB. I clearly remember the deep dive in 75 after coming out for sea trials. First time at sea aith flooding at test depth. I was in my bunk, first one in from the crews lounge. Also rember Dave Trails beat up cars when I lived with him in Norwich. I paid for ll of the practical jokes that Tosso and I dreamed up when Sonny McLaren and others mummified me in duct tape while on the Fulton. Thank God all the hair has finally grown back. |

Doug Plummer - 10/22/99 17:25:50 My Email:dcplummer@aol.com Boat: 619 | Comments: After I initially signed the log, I reviewed the log. Near the end of the log, J. O'Brien asks who ARLOW is. ARLOW was a late 60s or early 70s blue MGB owned by Dave Trail. ARLOW was also responsible for taking miles off of the odometer on the exercise bike in Missile Compartment Middle Level Port. There was a log near the bike where riders would enter their named, initial milage, final milage, and miles rode. Several of us in M-Div knew that the XO wanted to put more miles on the bike than the Gold c ew did. We didn't want him to suceed, so we would petal the bike backwards which made the odometer go backwards. Rather than use our own name, we all used ARLOW's name. When we were done exercising, there were less miles on the bike than when we had st rted. After about a week or two of that, the XO put a notice in the POD stating that there was a concern that riding the bike backwards could damage it. We knew that was BS, but we didn't want to get caught, so we (Jim Adams) removed the speedometer cable and id it. The MTs tried making a replacement out of lock wire, but it kept breaking. The next day MMC (SS) Joe Carter woke me up and told me to return the speedometer cable. I told him that I didn't know where it was (I didn't). He said that he didn't care if I knew where it was--he wanted it returned. So, I had to talk Jim Adams into elling where it was and return it. Regarding the our torpedo that came back and hit us: My rack was in forward port berthing. It was on the top, just to the right when you entered forward port berthing. It was the one that only had half of a curtain due to a ventilation duct being in th way. Anyway, I was sleeping one day when the following events occured: 1. Collision alarm is sound 2. OD announces "Collision Imminent" on the 1MC 3. OD announce "Secure from Collision Immenent" 4. I heard a huge bang on the hull 5. Collision alarm is sounded Writing this account as brought back many memories, like the time I was the AMR2LL watch during the AJ's very first deep dive. As we approached test depth the collision alarm sounded... |

I was a Missile Tech on the gold crew from '84 to '87. Transferred to the Canopus to get some "time on the beach" What i really got was 14 hour days in the missile andling shop Yeehaaaah!!!!! I still remember the day the OLD GIRL pulled into Kingsbay all rusted, green and white from the LAST RUN on her way to the Combined Crew/Decom process. All the tender pukes were lined up on the rail LAUGHING!!!!I was never so roud!!!! The AJ was a real peach. If you ever spent time on the AJ you had the honor of riding a REAL BOAT! Ten day refits, 85 day patrols covering everyone else's target packages so they could make port calls. 8 out of every 10 guys had been to Mast at east once. That was a real Boat!! It was nice to see some of the goldies i served with on the guestlog.I'll sent you some photos if you would like. |

Bill Trammell CWO$, USN, RET - 05/24/99 14:13:16 My Email:trammell_w@popmail.firn.edu Boat: Medregal SS 480, Addrew Jackson SSBN 619 | Comments: Bob, great Web site. I reported aboard Andrew Jackson just a few days after launching in Sept 62. I was the leading Nav ET (ET1 SS) on the Blue Crew and took her around, through the Canal, to Charleston. I made the first three patrols and was transferred o Fleet Sub Tra Fac, Pearl in 65. Later, I was an Instrumentation Officer at Naval Ordnance Test Unit, Cape Canaveral for Andrew Jackson’s DASO after her overhaul in the early 70s. While at the Cape an an Instumentation Officer I was in the firning loop t at shot a lot of DASO A3 & C4 Missles off 598's, 616's and 640's, and even one British Boomer. But my biggest thrill (and puckering of certain lower orifices) was when that thump and bounce occurred at AJ's first MISSLE AWAY. There was quite a celebration as we made the rounds of the watering establishments in Cocoa Beach that night where we consumed a lot more adult beverages than we should have. I still have the Commissioning Program that lists both Blue & Gold Commissioning Crews. If anyone needs to look up or verify someone, let me know & I will get back to you with the info I have. Also, I attended the last 619 Reunion, Charleston 1993, that I know about. It would be great if we could get together for another reunion sometime. |

I was short cycled to the Daniel Webster for 1 patrol before I got out in March, '81. On my last patrol on the A J I was the Sonar Division LPO. Although it's been about twenty years, some of my best memories and life stories are still from my days in the silent service, especially onboard the the Andrew Jackson. |

I reported aboard in early 75 while the AJ was converting to Posidon at EB. I was an STS2(ss) and served on the blue crew after we got out of the yard. Went down to Florida for posidon test firing and torpedo cert. I was on the sonar stack when we test fired a torpedo and it came back and hit us.(didn' sink us though). I have a great deal of stuff from the old boat and still keep in touch with several of my fellow sonar techs and will inform them of this site. I hope to hear from some other shipmates of this old lady ever though we did not serv together at the same time we still have something in common, the Andrew Jackson. Jim O'Brien |
