SWAINE , Ernest Judson ~ 78, Canso, died January 21, 1998, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Hazel Hill, he was a son of the late Edward and Esther (Smith) Swaine. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the 44th Anti-Aircraft Battery. He was the postmaster in Canso, retiring in 1986 after 44 years of service. He was a former town councillor and the former fire chief of the Canso Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 46, Canso, and the United Baptist Church, Canso. Surviving are daughter, Brenda, Halifax; sons, David, Attleboro, Mass; Graham, Baltimore, Ont.; Brian, St. John’s, Nfld; Barry, Dartmouth; four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Anne Easthope; brother, George. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today, 2-9 p.m. Saturday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday in the United Baptist Church, Canso, Rev. David Wheeler officiating. Burial at a later date in Fourth Hill Cemetery. Donations to veterans wing palliative care of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
